Hi, I'm considering purchasing one of these two swords [leaning towards the more expensive one] as an entry level repro / backyard cutter, and frankly, point of reference for future purchases. I've read many good things about this particular dealer from various sites, including this one, but his reputation is only half of my concern- how worthy are the swords for their price, if at all, and are they practical, or should I go for something more high end? To be clear, I'm looking for something with more durability than edge retention, perhaps even flexibility to handle abuse. Let's say I intended to actually use these as a sword- I know 1060 is decent steel, but are these particular ones good or genuine? I would aim for the second one, function over form, I have had several of Hanbon's folded katana and they stand to to use and come quite sharp, I still have two however I have not had one of their Jians.

After much research, indecision, research, indecision, I just ordered up the Hanwei Cutting Jian from Sevenstars. It seemed the best bang for the hard-earned buck. Was surprised it was available. I'm a total noob, and about the most important criteria for me is that its a REAL sword. Now I will sleep happy

That's a very good choice, I have 1 of these and its very durable, well balanced and all that' and made from good quality steel. Not to mention a great cutter.
If you don't intend on taking it apart very often perhaps put a little bit of lock-tight on the hex nut and it won't work its way loose after a cutting session.
Cheers
