So father's day has passed, but I had this revelation yesterday. My father is constantly borrowing my knife that I carry, and even borrows my mother's emergency knife she keeps in her car for all sorts of tasks. So I'm looking to get him an EDC so he lays off of mine.
I'm looking for one that is going to take some abuse, as my dad uses it for all sorts of things. I'd also prefer it to be inexpensive, as in sub $40. It can't be a kershaw, as some Michigan judges consider their opening mechanism to be kindred to a switchblade.
The ones I've considered are the Spyderco Tenacious, the Schrade SCH104L, and the Cold Steel Mini Recon 1.
I'm open to any suggestions!

I've heard pretty fantastic things about the Tenacious and the Recon lines both. Though I'm more of a Spyderco fan, I might lean a bit more towards the Mini Recon 1. Also, there is the Kershaw Skyline. It has a flipper opening mechanism, but is not assisted like the others and runs about $35-$40. I tend also to shy away from Schrade. Not to bad mouth them, but I've never had a knife from them that was any good. I don't much like the aesthetics, but the Ontario Rat 1 is supposed to be superb for its price, which is less than $30.

I have a Spyderco Delica 4 that I've carried every day for about a year now. It's probably the best EDC I've had after carrying Gerber, H&K, and Buck. I know it isn't a high-end list, but I am not going to drop over $75 on a EDC. The Delica 4 just feels "right" to me: thin but you can still hold on to it, it fits well in a pocket, the blade holds a good edge, and I like a combo blade. I got mine off eBay for just under $40 and would buy it again in a heartbeat!
