Hi guys I'm looking for help finding the best sources for Viking/Norse symbols and their meanings. I'm had Christian Fletcher (with the huge help of Findlithui) add runes to the shield maiden he made for me. We both think that adding a few symbols to the runes would add to the look of the sword. The runes translate to storm upon the sea. Only one side of the blade has runes now but both will when it's finished. The pic in the middle shows the side without the runes. Any help on good sources for symbols or suggestions on what you guys think would look good. Would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone. Cheers John

What about this en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulfberht"Ulfberht is a name given to unique Viking swords used in Scandinavia in the 1000s. The unique, high-quality steel they incorporated remained unparalleled until the Industrial Revolution. 171 such swords have been found so far, but only a few of these have been proven to be authentic Ulfberht swords.[1] The earliest Ulfberhts date from circa 850"

Don't put Ulfberht there, Ulfberht deserves to be inlayed with pattern welded wire, etching is just not the way to go...

I could probably add four to six symbols to each side of the blade.

I came across a very ancient galdor spell. Traces of its use can be found in many cultures. It is generally used against one who has wronged the wizard who pronouces the curse. Make sure you read the whole thing before you try it. Be aware that use by novices is not recommended. Here it is: This spell requireth ye hand gesture to be made in ye following way. Extend thy power hand outward toward thy intended target with thy palm facing thy face. Fold thy thumb, first, third, and small fingers into thy palm. If this be done properly, then ye finger of death and damnation shall be extended towards the heavens. Whilst making the sign of malediction indicated above, intone the following incantation in a great and wrathful voice: YYYYYUUUUUUUUU YYYYYUUUUU EEEEEESSSSSSSS EEEEESSSSS OOOOOHHHHHHHH OOOOOHHHHH BBBBEEEEEEEEEEEEE BBBBBBEEEEE

What do you guys think about a Mjolnir?

Mjolnir is about as Norse as it gets. If it were up to me, I would put a simple, rather elongated Mjolnir on each side of the blade.
Really angular knotwork might work out alright too, but I'm not sure how "Viking" it is.

Knot work is Viking... the Irish made it better.. So realy no such thing as Celtic Knot work... The Valk knot would look great... maybe the hammer not so much.. but depends on if you are keeping it or not.. Mjolner is its own weapon...

I believe I have this sword now. I just had a scabbard made for it.

Boars and serpents too...lots of examples of zoomorphic critter carvings. Personally, I like Urnes style....

Look for symbols and art on runestones?
I should mention (you probably know this already) that, at least to my knowledge, there's no cases of runes on swords, so this is going to look Norse, but it may not be totally historical. They still look cool though!
EDIT:
I would also look at designs and patterns found on Norse jewelry. For example the Skåne hammer:
I'm sure you can find plenty of other examples like that to get some other ideas!

Maybe I should of started a new thread. This thread is old and I necrod it because I bought it a while back and had Christian Fletcher make a matching scabbard for it.
