found a set of 4 Japanese water for sale for $80 shipped on one of the wood working sites and they showed up today doesn't even look like they were used.I got 800,1000,1500 and 6000.so now I 'm going to start learning to use them.I'm looking forward to seeing how well they work.I've always been able to put a good edge on knives and axes.but this will be time sharping swords.will let everyone know how I make out.crazywolf

well so far so good.I took my wife's sword which had some what of and edge on it.with the 1000 I bought that edge up to really sharp plus it is smooth cutter now.soaked it good and took my time now will have to get the 800 out and work on my Viking sword.thanks aussie-rabbit for the tip.

well as of now I have done 2 katanas 1 wakizashi 1 Viking sword and am working on a1796 saber.while I have done a lot of sharping over the years doing swords with the water stone has been different as I knew it would.all swords that are done slice paper very easily and clean.what I have learned slow and steady is the way to go keep stone wet and clean to clean I us a green scrub pad to remove the black left on the stone from the steel I use all four stones for dull blades working my way to a real sharp edge when sword cuts good after using one stone move to the next.if already kind of sharp I try a higher grit stone and see what happens.be very careful with double edge swords easy to forget about other side having an edge while holding your hand on blade to keep it flat on the stone.no cuts so. I also find it relaxing to running the blade over the stone. all in all I'm very happy with how my swords are turning out.while water stones are not cheap they are the way to go when sharping anything don't see my oil stones getting much use now.
