It took some time to figure out exactly what this is and the only way was an old catalog a friend had I think was from Cold Steel.Seemed they made a short sort of tanto style knife called a Kaiken or Kwaiken and I checked Wikipedia and found this also commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File: ... _tanto.jpg at least I now know what it is.
Or commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.ph ... fulltext=1 for some reason there dosent seem to be to much info about it.
I'll try to make this short but my great grandfather was the first curator of the Springfield armoury museum in Massachusetts and also a collector of historical guns, swords and many other things.
please click on the photo to open it up and see the swords on the ceeling and the armour.
As his collection was passed down appon his death to my grandfather and at his passing to my father who sadley (I loved my dad dearly, great guy) passed away Nov 7th.Well this seems to be the first time there was 3 children to split the collection between and this is one of the first pieces I have recieved. BTW My mom,bro and sis are in Mass I'm in GA. so it's hard to mail things to me.
The total length is 11.5 in , the blade length is 7.5 in and the hilt is 3 in plus the brass part between them is 1 in.
the spine is .250 thick thinning down to 1/16 and it is 13/16 at it's widest so a pretty small piece.I know it is at least 100 plus years old as it was in my Greatgrandfathers collection since before 1900.It seemed to be highly decorated but the wooden scabbard is well worn.It seemed to have a ocean front scene on it with waves, birds and shells and the hole for the pin in the handle has a nice brass piece around the hole.
Well can anyone tell me how to get a date off this,I think it should be under the hilt/handle and would it hurt to at least clean the blade.Theres no rust at least and does anyone know anything about this type of weapon.I think I read they were often carried by women as a last resort, please can anyone help me with this one piece.
