I just got and opened up the packaging for a new Gerber Instant... listing price is around $32 plus shipping.
Official stats:
Item # 31-002184
Blade Length: 3.18"
Closed Length: 4.57"
Overall Length: 7.75"
Weight: 4.01 oz.
Steel Type: 7Cr17Mo
"Tactically inspired, the Instant utilizes Gerber’s Assisted Opening 2.0 mechanism for easy, one-handed blade opening. The thumb plunge unlocks the three-and-a-half-inch blade for safe closure. Layers of G-10 composite are textured and shaped to make an ultra-light, ultra-tactile handle. It’s a sleek clip folder made for everyday use."
I opened the clam shell packaging and was going to disassemble it, like I do all my other knives (it's a bad habit, I know)... I tried an old trick using a hairdryer to heat and loosen up the locktited screws... it worked on the first screw, which came out without a hitch, but then the second screw started stripping, so I stopped and heated the screws up again... tried another one and stripped it! 3 out of 4 scale screws stripped, so I eventually gave up since the screws were NOT going to come out. I gave up and came to SBG to relax for a bit. I'll post some pics later when I decide to go back and look at the knife again.
Another thing: the official statement from Gerber states that it's "easy, one handed opening"... this sucker was very hard to open, so I loosened up the pivot screw a little, and while it did get a little easier, still a PITA compared to other knives. Guess I'll give this one away to my younger brother.
I'm not going to do a review on this one since like I said, will be given away.
