hello everyone. Today by searching on SFI forum and SBG forum, I found some people talking about a modern steel called cpm-3v which is a really tough steel. In term of edge holding and impact toughness, it is among the best.
I found some old topic on both forum showing katana made by this forum, I also watched some youtube video showing performance of blades made by this steel. The result is quiet impressive. The smith is called Dan Keffler and his siteweb is out of date, either moved or deleted. What does he do now? Does he still taking cpm3v steel katana order? Does anyone have his news? I sent him a mail to his mail address mentionned on his site, but i received a failure delivery message.
Even if the katana is through hardened and not even forged, even it does not have a hamon, I found his performance in abuse test are way too good. It does look like a new 'super katana'. And this make me a little sad, I thought Mr Howard Clark L6 bainite katana is the superkatana, and now, we just show me something who seem to have better toughness and impact power. I dont want to end with something I payed a lot a lot to know that there is another one which use better steel with easier craft method and which performs much better.
However, something is very strange. There is only one person who show the cpm3v steel katana, he is called jnathan france. In every forum, he is the only one who own this katana. does Dan Heffler only make one katana with this steel? All the video on youtube are from Dan himself. No one other own this kind of katana. Very strange.
For people who know this steel and who have already used the katana, what do you think about those one compared to HC L6 bainite?
I need some people who know well metallugy and forging to give me some explanation to ease my angoisse so that I can rest in peace. Also please forgive my noobness and ignorance if I said something wrong.
thank you in advance. Good days!!
