Hi SBG Members I have just acquired my very first sword and would love to know more about it. Can anyone help with any info please? plus.google.com/photos/+EuanSwart/albums/5992396977738287057The blade is 600mm longx 34mm wide at the base, and the hilt is 110mm long. The following markings are stamped on both sides of the blade: [Flower like motif] 1806 (or J806) [Flower like motif] Fox [Flower like motif] I would really appreciate any info anyone has on this sword. Hey Euan.
Running fox is a British Makers mark. Don't have a copy pf Bezdeck's English sword makers handy.
Think the 1806 date is correct, but I don't associate this style hanger with the Napoleonic War's. Form is older.
Probably get a better response to this on SFI, as there are a bunch of premier english collectors over there.
Cheers

Thanks Dave, I posted on SFI a few days ago, but no reply yet. The Running Fox marks from England were from Samuel Harvey, and all appear to have SH in the body of fox. (From the limited research I have done so far) Mine does not have the initials.
Do you know any thing about the "flowers"?
Regards

Afraid I'm not much help. Beyond my expertise. The "dove pommel" has me baffled. See it and think german/bavarian; but no makers mark for a fox. The wolf is Passau, but this is definitely a fox. Lots of later period foot arty and bandsmen cuttoes that have broadly similar scabbards and form, but not yours specifically.
Could be Austrian militia as easily.
Hope you get a hit on SFI
