I've been looking around for a knife for my wife, but I don't know nearly as much about knives as I do about swords. I was hoping to get some advice or pointed in the right direction about what places would help educate myself about quality when it comes to knives. Her knife would be an everyday carry, I was thinking a folding knife, maybe with an assisted opening mechanism. She does have some experience w/my folding knife. It's a Gerber, there're this little crossbar on the blade to help flip it open, not sure what it's called and don't know the model. I'm trying to find something of good quality for under $50. Any information would be happily appreciated

A lot will depend on your wife's hand size. I just recently gave my wife 2 knives, a Paragon Tommy Lee designed boot knife to keep in the house for when I'm out (fits her hand like a glove - mine, not so much), and a SOG mini Vulcan as her EDC. I showed her lots of different types/manufacturers, but she was really blown away by the SOG. Just loved how fast and easy it is to open one handed even thought it's non assisted. I'll PM you later with some suggestions if you'd like.

That's a good point, and not one I had considered. I looked up both, I think that the mini Vulcan might be one that she'd be interested in. When you get a chance, I'd appreciate a PM w/more suggestions

I'd also suggest you look into some Kershaw knives. They have a ton of really good knives under $50. Amazon would be a good place to look for them.

There is no substitute for handling the knives in person. If it doesn't feel right in her hand it doesn't matter how many guys on the forum like it. An EDC knife is a deeply personal item.
Find out what the legal blade length limit is in your jurisdiction. You don't want to give her a gift that gets her a stern talking to from a cop who sees it clipped into her pocket. You and only you will be the bad guy if that happens.

I have to agree with the back up for minute; but I'm going to spin it a slightly different way. You're looking for a knife for your wife...is it because you like knives, and think she should have one? Or because she expressed an interest? I know quite a few men that have gotten knives for their other halves; and, in a large percentage of those cases, the women want nothing to do with them. Sure - they "appreciate" the gift, and they put the knife in their purse or tote to show that...but they never consider reaching for it, even when a knife is needed. At least half will admit that they're scared of it; many will say that they can't even open/close the thing. If she's got an interest, at the very least get a feel for what SHE likes rather than just buying what you (or we) want her to have.

I completely agree with these assertions... take her out to "test drive" as many knives as possible and see which one she likes best depending on her fit/likings. Also, make sure you understand the knife laws in your area since some municipalities have stricter laws than particular states. In my case, my wife loves knives and asked me to get her some that she would be able to use for self defense/EDC without my help, especially whenever I go out for an out of town for trainings. I had some I was selling, so she was able to check them out before I got the specific ones she asked for.

while my wife is not into knives like I am she also knows that when rolling around with someone on you a knife is a better weapon then a gun which she also carries.we both carry our blade on the left and gun on right if we get gapped because we let someone get to close that shouldn't have.then try to pin firearm in holster and cut them off you.doesn't work often and is last ditch but you got to what you must when it reaches that point.crazywolf

Taking her to a store is a great suggestion, now to convince her to go! lol To answer the question about if this was her or my choice, this was actually hers. I am just happy to help her out I live in VA, so the blade length doesn't have a limit, at least for the folding type that we've been looking at. I think it's just the typical no switchblade or ballistic knives restrictions.

That's a good call. I carry one as well and it is outstanding. It comes in many color, size and blade shape variations as well.

After all these years, the Griptillian and Mini Griptillian are still Benchmade's best selling model.

I'd suggest the Kershaw Leek as well. Having said that, my wife carries a Ka-Bar Mule.
