Hello all, I was dissembling a sword when I ran across a marking on the tang of the blade. I was wondering if anyone could identify the marking. It looks Chinese to me but since I have zero experience with Chinese swords and don't read Chinese other than the find the noodle house I can't really be sure. Thanks in advance for your help. ~Mike~ imageshack.com/a/img809/9073/9d6o.jpg

It doesn't look like any hanzi/kanji I've ever seen, but seeing as there's some 2000 or so, I suppose that's not saying much. If you turned it 90 degrees to the right, however, it does bear some resemblance to the hanzi/kanji for "wood": 木. Beyond that, I can't identify any individual radicals, so I wouldn't know where to start. Sorry I couldn't tell you more.

I was just informed by a Chinese neighbor that it indeed says wood, although it looked rushed.

Is that the tang? Boy it looks skinny, hope you don't cut anything with it.

Thank you Lancelot. I also confirmed it with other native Chinese speaking people in my Neighborhood. I live in North Flushing/Whitestone after all so I've no shortage of native speakers that are friends and neighbors to ask. So far they've all said "wood". Get ready for the poopstorm when I post where its from.
