So, I finally got my Mumei ShinShinto katana back from the Florida Shinsa held last week. Along with my sword, I received the judging paperwork, but it's in Japanese and I can't read a lick of it. I am taking it to my next Iaido class so that Shihan Miyake can look at it and explain to me in detail, but was wondering if anyone here could translate it before then since I'm really, really anxious to see what it says Attachments:

Here is what I got for the kantei, it might be bit too advanced for me to read, but after trying for a while I think I got it. 伝土佐 , 上野大掾吉国 , 延宝頃 Den Tosa , Kozuke no Daijo Yoshikuni , Empo Goro (1673-1680) So I would think In style of Tosa (province) Kozuke no Daijo (title) Yoshikuni (smith), Empo (age). So it would appear to be Shinto sword, and attribution to quite famous smith. You can see some recent discussion about Den prefix here: www.nihontomessageboard.com/nmb/ ... 462bcba88d Kozuke no Daijo Yoshikuni is rated Chujosaku in Fujishiro. I have some info about him in my books, which I can write later on. Hopefully I got the translation correct, your sensei can give a sure translation in case I made errors. I think that is good attribution, now the sword is more valuable than as mumei Shinshinto, congratulations.

Wow! Thanks for your translation! Yeah, this really made my day, seeing as it's been a rather difficult one at that. Any info you can send my way about smith you mentioned would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, LG. It may be a good move to sign up and ask around at this forum. They are pretty well respected and may be able to expand on you knowledge of your sword. www.militaria.co.za/nmb/index.php

thanks Adrian... I will do that probably tomorrow as time/work allows. I've visited that site many times, but never got around to joining. I guess now's the perfect opportunity to do so.

It's always a confidence booster for me when I have gotten correct translations. Here is some information about the smith: From Seskos Index, here he is listed Kanbun (1661-1673) "He worked in the style of his master Yoshimichi, the jigane is itame mixed with masame, the hamon is gunome-midare, partially mixed with sudareba, and has sugu-yakidashi." Also it's noted that this smith is wazamono: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WazamonoHere is Nihonto Club entry: nihontoclub.com/smiths/YOS300Here is Fujishiro entry: Here is Toko Taikan entry: Your sensei could probably assist in reading the whole entry. But it has Kanbun era - Tosa province - 2,5M Yen - Then 3 different signature styles he used. The actual text part would take me too long to translate correctly and most likely I would make many errors there.

Thanks Steel In... it was really a surprise when Jussi (SBG) and Chris Bowen (nihonto message board) both translated the judging sheet stating it's actually a Shinto katana rather than a ShinShinto katana as had been assumed by the guy who sold it to me, the auction house where he bought it from, and by me.
