I'm aiming for massive and intimidating on this one. I'm still adjusting the blade catchers a little but already made blanks to the rest of the design. I went with my Dueling Bowie jigs for the handle because they work well on the larger blades with or w/out gloves.

A Sandbar Bowie wouldn't have a clip point, it would be shaped more like a large Spanish knife of the period. No sharp top edge either.

Thanks for the input. I like the name and didn't think it really referred to a "known" knife. The "Sandbar" is just the place where the fight took place. I doubt there's any names that haven't already been used in naming a "Bowie" knife so if this somehow steps on someones toes I apologize. Is the original on display somewhere? Thanks, Mike

How about a D Guard Musso Bowie .Though there's intense argument over the original Sandbar knife. I believe it would more closely resemble the Butcher knives widely in use at the time, like this one. Attachments:

"Musso" is a collectors name that is still alive. And the "Musso" knife does exist. I don't think there will be a definite on the historic sandbar fight knife. It could have been a butcher's knife or any of the "trade" knives available at the time. I would guess that at that time in his life if he laid eyes on a knife he liked, he ended up with it.

You ever made baldric carry systems or blackened your d guards?

I have made Baldric / Sling carry rigs. All of my sheaths have a few attachment spots. I'm making an adapter to easily add rings to most belt sheaths so they can be quickly sling ed w/out the knife flopping around and twisting. I think many belt knives don't get carried much because you need your belt real tight or suspenders. Well, I've got a fix for that. I don't blacken my blades but I also don't polish them. There's not much shine or glare off a sanded finish. Mike

I like that your blades have an almost post apocalyptic look to them, of course I would love to see you do something longer than I've seen thus far.
