Hi all, just thought I'd share my thoughts on the Hanwei Antiqued Backsword and I have to say I'm pretty impressed so far. It seems to be very well put together with a nice grip that fits my hands nicely though I can understand troubles for people with bigger paws. She also handles very well, so well that I was quite taken aback. The blade is nice (though it's about average in sharpness) and in retrospect I'd prefer the non-antiqued version however I would definitely recommend it, not only because we aren't exactly spoiled for nice basket-hilts but this is a very nice and affordable piece in of itself. That's great to hear that you are pleased with it. I'd been considering it for a while now, but (like you mentioned) I have some slightly large paws.
Thanks for sharing!

Is the blade ,,antiqued'' too? If not and you are very sure you prefer a non ,,antiqued'' version, do as I did with my Cold Steel basket hilt: Take the sword apart ( very easy) and dunk the hilt and assorted hiltparts (pommel) in a bucket with household vinegar. It should take about 10 minutes to have a bright steel basket. Rinse directly in water or ammonia (best, but stinks) to incapacitate the acid and take a blowdryer to it. Be sure to cover all nooks and crannies. Look for unsightly spots while your at it and clean up with steelwool. clean again and oil. Presto! Nice gleaming hilt. Look for a bucket or tupperware not much larger than the hilt. Should take no more then 6 bottles of vinegar, costs nihil. I got this from a gun restoring website ( How to take off old gun blue) and it works like a charm.

I actually quite like the antiqued hilt components, in fact I believe they look far better than the non-antiqued version. The antiqued blade is the thing I'm not completely sold on. It looks ok, but not great.

I know what you mean by the antiqued blade. The same finish is on the Cromwell, Basket hilt Broadsword, and the Revolutionary hanger. I had the Cromwell and still have the hanger. The best thing about the finish, is I didn't have to worry about rust forming on the blade like all my other blades, also goes for the hilts. If you don't like the finish on the blade, you can sand it off.

Those are actually some bloody good points that I hadn't thought of. I'll leave the blade for now but it's nice to have options!

Always been kinda interested in the Hanwei backsword, if only for the blade itself. Nice to hear it's a decent quality piece.

What I like about Hanwei is the fit and finish and the extras, like the Gorgon head of whatever on the backsword. To get back to the antique finish on the blade: Is it the same as on the Hanwei German Bastard, the big one? That looks etched to me and is very deep.

It was even better when KOA was selling it for $220. Still the Hanwei Backsword and Cromwell are the best sub $300 basket hilts swords around.
