Hi guys, I'll get to the point...I want to get a Tenchi Ko Katana No -Bo HI and turn it into a utilitarian sword... duracoat the blade maybe...Possibly re wrap the handle with flat paracord or leather...a real working sword... be able to cut saplings and the such...and of course zombies  ....modify it into a modern day self defense sword....but i wanted opinions from you guys... Thanks for your help! (I did repost this here because not many people saw it in "Japanese Swords" )

Sounds good to me GoldenDragon. I enjoy cutting with Cheness swords. If anything happens to the Tsukas on my Yamakami Katana or Yamakami Ko-Katana I might do the same thing.

I'd been thinking about doing the same thing with the exact same Ko Katana. I'd love to see how this project of yours turns out when you've completed it.

One thing I'd wonder about is how you'd add girth to the handle to make it easier to grip.
Are you planning to keep the tsuka wood core or would you plan on something else?

paracord and leather are pretty thick, in some cases. To prevent from warping I might make the tsuka a unbreakable plexiglass or acrylic core. Either way I still have to come up with the funds, if i should put off with buying an AR or not...decisions, decisions xD .

Or, instead, should i just go with the Zombie Tools Zakasushi?

The ZT is a tough blade, personally I don't like the blade finish, you will get more satisfaction from doing it your way, go for canvas micarta for the grip and add paracord because it's so useful.

But will it really be worth it in the long run? Any ideas on how to make the sheath more resilient? Is it possible for me to regrind for a less sharp, but more durable edge? I'm trying to decide which would be more durable, and resilient, if S were to indeed HTF ...Thanks for y'alls help!

I'm going to modify the existing saya for a Tenchi Ko Kat, cover it in cowhide (stitched and glued, I suppose, not unlike a European scabbard), while also attaching a MOLLE gear strap to function as a retention strap for the Ko Kat for carrying.
Then I'm debating whether to spray the whole tsuka with waterproof lacquer or spray (I saw the tutorial for "painting" lacquer onto the tsuka ito, but I figured "Why couldn't I just remove the tsuka and spray the whole darn thing then let it dry and put it back on?")
Of course, I'm open to hearing any reasons why I shouldn't do that with the tsuka.
I figure, though, that taking those measures should make the Ko Kat water proof (well, mostly) while it's in the saya (leather treated with water proofing leather protectant).
That along with the retention strap should make for a high-quality relatively tactical melee weapon on a budget.
So, you know, that's what I'm doing.
I'll be posting pictures on the forum as the project goes along. I'm still waiting to receive, well, mostly everything.

I think I'm gonna go with the Zombie Tools Zakasushi, after modifying everything it will be about the same price. Plus, When/If SHTF, I want something I can strap to my pack, not on my hip, doesn't work very well with traditional saya. xD

Honestly, for what you're looking for, maybe a Hanwei Banshee is the answer. I have that thing strapped to my pack and I can pull it out from over my shoulder without any problem. ALSO that thing, I guarantee, will chop through just about anything that isn't made of inch thick steel. Plus, of course, equally important, it has a locking mechanism that'll keep that thing from coming loose and ruining your day.

I think I'm gonna go with the Zakasushi, but it's interesting...What do y'all think? ZombieTools Zakasushi or Hanwei Banshee?
