I like the design! However the practicality would serve better as a normal dagger, rather than one to parry with. If you added another inch to each side of the guard, and also attached a "D" ring to the side of the guard (to keep a sword from sliding down onto your hand) then it would work better as a parrying dagger. Really looking forward to seeing this project happen!

It's a beautiful design, but like Greg said, it would be a better parrying dagger if it had a different guard. Most parrying daggers have curved guards as far as I have seen. I still think you should keep the design like this though, it's better looking like that.

haha there is a D ring on the guard, the picture doesn't make it clear. Since the companion sword is a longsword and not a rapier I guess your right that it'd be better to think of it as a normal dagger with parrying capabilities.
Would a normal dagger typically be used in the off-hand or the sword hand?
Also would a person without a rapier who only had a parrying dagger for defense, use it in his left hand or his right?

That depends on how/when the dagger is used. If the longsword is the main weapon, the dagger will only be put to use when the longsword is lost/impractical, in a ringen situation for example. Or in a tavern brawl where the longsword is too long to maneuver. Since the longsword requires two hands (mostly), the dagger is only a back up weapon, not part of the primary weapon system as with rapier and main gauche.
If a person only carried a dagger, it would be used the the right hand, if the person was right handed (otherwise left). There are plenty of manuals showing how to employ a dagger. The depicted daggers often only have a sharp point and no real cutting edge.
