Excellent review, and you have changed my opinion on the sword. I like big swords as well, but I was concerned by how the broad blade and weight would impact handling. You have eliminated my concern, karma incoming!

Yup; that Principe is extremely compelling. But if I'm going to spend 2K on swords any time soon a AN XI light cav sabre or a walloon has priority. ( But that all depends what my piggy bank looks like next fall... )
Very nice...

I'm so with ya Bill. But judging from the awesome pic of Pat holding the Principe. I'm concerned the grip on the Alexandria might be to small to grip fully with both hands. I almost bought the one that was for sale at myarmoury but the owner mentioned the grip was to small for him. Has anyone handled the Alexandria at all?

I know the Alexandria would not have enough room for my meatpaws... that is why I'm all about the Principe.

I'd love to see albion do a fullered version like Peter Johnsson's Vorpal sword. Attachments:

I can get both hands on the Crecy grip which is 6 5/8. It is tight though.

Is the Alexandria's grip the same size as the Crecy?

I couldn't... that is why I liked the boarderwatch better, the pommel opened up more space for my hands.

Update. The new Principe arrived earlier today. (with a prepaid shipping label) The blades finish is improved, being Albions typical satin finish without the striations of the first blade. As you can see, the grip is the correct corded design. There's absolutely nothing to complain about with this one. Thanks go to the folks at Albion for a very quick turn around. Mike was very adamant about getting me the right sword, and the guys in the shop were embarrassed by the mistake and wanted to make it right. Kudos to the peeps in New Glarus for an excellent product and outstanding customer service. As much as I liked the original I like this one even more. The grip does add quite a bit to the swords aesthetic appeal.

I have to agree about how the new grip looks better. Definitely adds a bit of texture to the hilt

Do the lines in the grip go straight across or spiral down?

Hi Patrick, what are your thoughts on the grip diameter, is it nice and thick or on the thin side?

It spirals down. The grip has a cord binding beneath the leather covering, ie. a single piece of cord wound around the grip core.

The grip is thicker than the original, and thicker than the average Albion grip due to the cord binding. I have larger hands and find it quite comfortable. I think anyone who finds the standard Albion grips a bit thin would probably be pleased with this one.

That is good to hear... I had a Baron and thought the grip was way too thin... and a Munich, which I LOVED everything about except the thin grip. Really lusting after a Principe... and would hate to have my hopes dashed with a thin grip.

I'd love to see the Principe and Alexandria side by side to compare the grips.
