Hello everyone, I have always loved the middle earth inspired weapons and armor. I saw only a glimpse of Thranduils elves armor in the first hobbit film and I liked them. I was wondering if anyone has found any good full pictures of the armor as I have not. Also wondering if anyone has seen any of their weapons as well. Their armor is different so I am thinking maybe their weapons will be as well. Also saw this at weta's website, a repro of one of the elves daggers in the desolation of smaug. Look like they would be really beautiful blades if someone really made them. Look like they would have a tempering pattern on them as well. www.wetanz.com/daggers-of-tauriel/ Thanks all for any info and help.

Looks like nobody has replied, so I guess nobody else can find any real good pictures. After watching the new hobbit movie, Thranduils soldiers have different armor than the one I saw in the first movie. Both still look good. I ended up finding some replicas of some of the weapons. Here are some from the noble collection, they do a good job on making nice replicas, though not able to be used. www.noblecollection.com/index.cf ... y&catid=91 Here is Thranduils sword from UC, I like the look of the sword. Hopefully a nice functional blade will be made by someone. www.budk.com/product/Sword-of-Th ... 176126.uts

The arms and armor was the best part about the Hobbit for me. I especially liked the gear that the guards from Dale had. I'm really excited to see all of the fancy stuff that they get from Smaug's horde in the next movie.

If you're really keen on the best possible pictures, my suggestion is to snag a copy of the film on blu-ray and make your own screenshots. I've had to do this in the past for shows/films where there were no good pictures available (Game of Thrones in particular, for the Kingsguard armor). Remember: someone has to be the first to get those screenshots, so why not take the initiative and be that person? If you do, please share those pictures so that others may benefit as well. Cheers.

I was watching Desolation of Smaug on DVD last night and I noticed that the swords used by the elven soldiers looked noticably different from those nagamaki type elven swords from the previous trilogy. It's hard to tell, though, since they only show up in a brief glimpse during one of the battles. I did some googling and this was the best (and only) picture I could find of them: 1.bp.blogspot.com/-II3lMKOSWV0/U ... .58+PM.png As you can see, they have this kind of "two-handed yataghan" thing going on, with a slight forward curve after the ricasso turning fairly strongly curved back closer to the tip. They are also pretty big. Not sure about the big pierced ricasso and lack of guard but otherwise I think it's a pretty neat concept. It's really a shame we only ever get a clear look on the weapons the main characters use.

Thranduils elves are the "Wood Elves", a little more "primitive" (drinking, feasting, orc slaying with pleasure), where the elves of Lothlorien seem to be the "High(er) Elves"; theyre much more decent and behave more eloquent. Different tribe, different culture i guess; same with humans.

Curiously, though, the wood elves also seem to have a thing for pierced filework on their blades - you see the same thing on Thranduil's sword and Tauriel's knives. You'd think that sort of thing would be more popular with the more cultured elves, and the less peaceful ones would prefer a straightforward no-nonsense design.

There is a book coming out next week titled " The Hobbit: Cloaks and Daggers" that is supposed to be all about the arms and armor used in the films. Its a great potential source for details on weapons, I definitely plan on picking it up.

Perhaps the Dwarves are best known for their armour above all other things battle-related. Dwarf armor would be iron or steel chain-mail, which was invented and used by the Dwarves to great effect by the time of the Wars of Beleriand. Of course, iron or steel helms and shields would accompany this chain-mail. Dwarven helmets are recorded to have covered the face, with the use of a forged mask. This mask was particularly helpful when fighting Dragons, as the face would be shielded from the flames, thanks to the expert craft of the Dwarves. Lastly, with the use of Mithril, their armor changed more dramatically than any other of their works did. Having such properties as to make arrows bounce off, Mithril became an invaluable substance to the Dwarves, so much, so that a single mail shirt could be "worth more than the value of the Shire and everything in it". However, the use of Mithril in arms and armor became very limited after Orcs of the Misty Mountains and the newly awakened Balrog of Morgoth overran the Dwarf mines of Khazad-dûm. I emailed Peter Lyon himself to ask a lingering question I had about one of the swords he made for Rings. He replied the same day and gave me a TON of information. I know he is a busy man, so to give me such a lengthy reply was quite generous. It was very detailed as well. What a guy!
