Anyone here heard about Benchmade knives "bullying/stealing" other people's designs, hiring illegal workers, importing knives illegally? I saw this a while back and don't know what to think about these two companies and their flaming each other (Benchmade & Roadside Imports): Benchmade False AdvertisingBenchmade Lawsuit against Roadside Imports

At a glance, the whole thing sounds purely ridiculous, or downright infantile. It seem like Roadside Imports is just slinging mud at random to see if any of it sticks.
But that's just my very superficially educated opinion. If anybody actually knows better, please do correct me!

I've dealt with Roadside Imports twice, and while they do have quality stuff, the owner/rep I was in contact with was kind of rude. I don't have all the facts on the feud between them and Benchmade, so that's why I was asking other's opinions. It does seem strange though, that Benchamde was investigated by ICE and other feds for several infractions. Again, I haven't had the time or energy to do more research on my own, so if anyone in SBG land is in the know, that would be great. I've heard great stuff about Benchmade Knives, but have been having a hard time justifying getting their stuff if they are infringing on other's designs, exploiting workers, etc.

I didn't know about the copyright and worker issues. I knew that they seem to have less than stellar QC, but that's about it.

I have had a long standing relationship with Benchmade. To the point where I may not be a completely impartial third party. That said, Roadside Imports is full of crap.
I'm not going into deep detail in a public forum. I'll just say that RSI was indeed slinging mud to see what would stick.

Those of you who've read my stuff know that I'm not really into folders, although I own a few. I'm an old fart with a sometimes colorful past and I've bought, sold, and traded as many folders, spring assisteds, and auto knives as you can imagine in my time. Over those years, my experience with Benchmade knives is that they have always been of exceptional quality and performance. Hell, that is what you pay for, the name and the expected quality. They are very proud of their blades, but to my knowledge, they have never let anyone down, even in the most dire of cirumstances. Sure, there are other companies now that can meet or flat out beat them as far as quality for the price, but that isn't what we're talking about here. Do they make good stuff? Well, I'm looking at a couple of their pieces, and I'm glad I have them. As to their producing knives with stolen designs and/or illegals doing the work? Or any of the other assertions made by RSI? HellifIknow. If, since I bought these over 10 years ago, they've gone the wrong way, as the RSI guy says, that would be purely shameful. Truly so. But I simply advise everyone to take alla this with a heavy dose of skepticism. - TW
