Anyone own any of their swords, specifically the French Hussar sabre or something likeit? I really like the looks of it and am interested in the likeness of Universal and WEI etc I was just wondering about the general census or if anyone actually owns one and what they think. I'm even tempted by the Windlass 1860 naval or 1840 heavy cavalry sabre which I like a lot as well.. Who knows I might end up with all of them.. Thanks

I have owned something like 16 Universal/WEI swords; still have 11 last time I counted. Most of my reviews of them are accessible on the old review list.
In general these are decent repros with emphasis on fit and finish. Weapon dynamics are a secondary consideration. With few exceptions blades have little or no historic taper causing blades to be sluggish. British swords are particularly weak in representation. Thats would seem odd for a previous colony and commonwealth, except that the weakness correspond to "India Patterns" customized for native stature.
These are good carbon steel swords; not exceptionally correct though. Best rates are from KoA; and they will sharpen most of them for a small fee.

I have a fair amount of unbudgeted funds from the cycle sale which I wasn't planning to have but I was only thinking of around $300 for a sword and sword belt/hanger, could I spend more sure. I suppose I'd be willing to spend what I needed in order to get what I want I don't need anything top notch or expensive necessarily though I just need it to be functional and match the scabbard accordingly.

I was just being a smart ass; and giving you a chance to see what's out there for Napoleonic, as you were talking about getting a Universal French Hussars sword. www.sharpecompendium.net/shops/This is a nice index of some of whats out there for reenactment and period stuff. Fall Creek sutlery can get you a pretty sound saber belts for $70.00. Seriously, if you don't mind some risk, you can actually go to Amazon.com, type in saber belts, and you will get some hits. Think you can buy some saber straps for $24.00 and use whatever belt you like. Point being, do you really need a saber belt? You don't need it to cut. You're not reenacting. What's the point. Better off spending the money on a pair of leather gloves for handling the sword. Only say that for your consideration as I, for historical interest have a battery of accessories to ornament my swords that bewilders the average sword owner. It's ambience. Whichever you choose check out available dealers. Market research and site visits will give you a better feel for whats out there and what supposed works with the period of your interest. Cheers

No worries Dave I know it was all in fun.. And I didn't mean that to come across smug in anyway so I hope you didn't take it that way.. I very much appreciate the input and advice from yourself as well as all the other members. That is why I ask... Yeah I don't reeeally need the belt... But it sure would make it better if I did I do the same thing with most of my handguns too.. Infact even though it's heavy and mostly impractical when I'm in the field compared to other rigs I have and occasionally use a full western rig for one of my single actions  And now that you mention it... Yeah I think I need some gloves too.. Seriously

I would trust Dave's opinion about WEI and US. The French Hussar Sabre is nice in all aspects, but the blade is very heavy. Still haven't had a chance to cut with mine, but when handling it, it's quite heavy sword and especially controlled stopping of it is difficult for me. I still think for the price it's very good deal. And the sharpening job Kult of Athena did is very good.
