Is it common to put a little lead in the wood grip to make a sword a little less blade heavy and move the CoB back a bit? What are the pros and cons of this? My thought is to do a wood sandwich grip and carve some grooves into the wood and epoxy in some lead. Then wrap as normal. Thoughts? Screeching 'don't do it'? Or green light?

How well a sword handles has more to do with mass distribution in the blade. It won't hurt anything if you put the lead in. make sure you put it as far from the guard as possible. That way, you get your POB shift with a minimum amount of added weight.

If you have empty space in the pommel you could try some lead shot, or tungsten.
