Quality ARs run just fine dirty. Just have to keep them moist. Also, why do you need a gunsmith? ARs are Lego when it comes to building/taking apart

I've got a bottle of this cleaning/lube oil that I use to keep the BCG and charging handle slick (only takes a couple of drops). I've read that most ARs only need to be kept lubed to fire fine, and besides, I won't be shooting all that much. Can't afford all this ammo as a poor college student!
I had to go with cheap Bear ammo due to the college financial situation. Apparently Bear ammo is steel cased, which leads to more powder residue building up in the AR, and lacquer coated, which imbeds itself into the chamber more easily and fouls it up, so I'll make sure to keep the chamber nice and clean.
I heard ammo prices should be going down by next year. At the current, for 500 or 1000 round cases, the going rate seems to be about 50 cents per round. What was the price like back when the gun climate wasn't so bad? I don't want to jump the gun on buying bulk.

25c for steel and 30c for brass was "good price" pre panic. Right now I'm paying 33c for steel.

You can reload steel cases too, as long as they are boxer primed. As for the carbon buildup, I have one word...Strikehold.

Very nice. Must say I’m a bit jealous, down here in Oz we simply don’t have access to anything like that. I've got a browning Abolt .223 & a CZ .22 and am deliberating on an under & over 12g, wouldn’t mind some laxing in the laws then id pickup something just like yours

Guys, i would get in VERY much trouble if they catch me with a telescopic BATON here in good old germany! And to see you guys with your "toys"... But youre allowed to buy an 80kg-punch-crossbow, bolts with bladed tips and a sniper scope if youre 18 or older...

Ugh I wish I could afford an AR. But I do like my remington 870 tactical and my Ruger 1911 .45 auto. How many rounds have you put through her OP and what are you paying?

Laws concerning weapons rarely make sense. Here in Sweden it is probably easier getting a license for a .308 hunting rifle than a licence for a powerful air rifle  .

Haven't broken her in yet, as I just got the lower yesterday morning. I'm keeping the lower off campus with the shooting team's captain, but I may drop by tomorrow and ask him for it so I can loose off a few rounds. The price of everything (upper, lower, foregrip, rear sight, 280 rounds of ammo) cost exactly $1000 including taxes and shipping. Protip, get a fresh upper, but a used lower should be just fine. Decent lowers like Stag cost at least $300 for the base model (complete lower with normal pistol grip and the usual "tactical" telescoping stock), but I got my lower through ArmsList, which cost only $275 and came with the ACS-L stock (usually $100 by retail) and an Ergo Suregrip (usually $20-25).

AK-74 in da hizouse! I love FALs, but they're proud of them. Even the century arms guns have gone up considerably.

Quick update:
Headed over to PSA's shooting range this afternoon and put about 45 rounds of steel case through it. Being new to semi-auto rifles I kinda screwed up on reloading it, I wasn't sure if I was supposed to pull the charging handle back after I ran out of ammo in the first mag, but apparently you just load in the new mag and then pull the charging handle. Thanks to my derpiness I had two FTFs. The first one was due to a retarded reload. The second was that I wasn't sure if a round was properly chambered, so when I pulled the charging handle, I released it slowly, which didn't let the bullet feed from mag to receiver properly (I think I'm supposed to just pull it all the way back and release rather than maintaining control of the handle the whole time).
My friend also shot off an additional 20 rounds of brass ammo with no problems.
Also, a quick question on firing stance: My elbows are supposed to stay down right? If so, how low, like squeezing my sides low? Or just low as in relaxed and pointing down?
All in all, good accuracy and precision, and it goes boom, so I'm quite satisfied.

You never touch the charging handle on an AR after the first mag, there is a bolt release on the left side of the weapon that you slap to release the bolt and strip a new round into the chamber. The charging handle is for one you have issues. You don't want to be supporting your elbows on your body, too many points of contact that can throw off your aim. I strongly recommend a quality two point sling. Some good info here: www.milcopptactical.com/blog.htm
