Here are a couple of big bowie knives I plan on getting started making as soon as I get to feeling better. Right now I have a mild case of the flu. The top one will be made of 1084 steel 1/4in thick, 12in long by 2in wide blade. It will have a 1/4in thick steel S guard with brass bolster behind the guard and at the end on the tang which will pinned to the tang. Haven't made up my mind on the wood scales yet. The bottom ome will be made of 5160 steel 1/4in thick, 14in long by 2 1/2in wide blade. It to will have 1/4in a S guard haven't deceide yet if it will be steel or brass. It to will have brass bolsters behind the guard and the end of the tang pinned on. Agian no ideas what wood Will used for the handle scales. It will take a couple of months maybe longer to get these made. Both will have a full flat grind with sharp false edges. One of these days I'll made a D guard big bowie. When I do it I will make it with a long narrower blade still will be 1/4in thick.

Love the blade shape on both not sure about the handle and s guard buts that's just my opinion I kinda like straight guards with a coffin shaped handle but again just my opinion I'm sure they'll look great once finished

Well I've did plenty with straight guards and coffin handles, wanted to try something a little fancier this time around.
Here soon I might try medevial style knives with pommels. I'm working on getting my multi purpose millinng/drilling/lathe home. Then I will have to learn to use it. After I get good enough I'll be able to do pommels, fullers and fancier guards.

Just another small update, cut the steel to length and drew the pattern out on the steel. Next I'll rough cut them out on the bandsaw. I'll used the belt grinder to clean up the profile. With the shape these ahve around the handles I'll have to do alot of handle filing too.

Rough cut out the profile with the bandsaw. Next I'll clean up the profile with the belt grinder using a 60 grit belt, maybe 36 grit. This is a side project so it will be a few months before they are finished.

Finished up the profiles some with the belt grinder using a 60 grit belt. Yesterday morning I started normalizing and straighting. Use the 2 burner long forge to do these. It's outside building a table to move it in the shop one of these days. First the forge first fired up running at 8lbs psi The smaller 12in blade coming up to heat. The smaller one at heat. The big 14in blade in the forge coming to heat. At heat, well actually cooled off a little had touble getting camera position to take the picture.

Getting the primary bevels ground in a little while they are still in the annealled state, easier to grind this way. Right now I'm using a 36 grit belt, I will finish them to 80 mabe 120 grit before I heat treat and temper them. Still have a long ways to go these will have a full flat grind to cut down on weight, will also make them a better chopper and slicer.

Did a little more grinding on the bowies. Have the bevels as far back has I'm going to go before heat treat and temper, the bevels are at 60 grit right now. It will be a few days before I can get them heat treated and tempered.

That is good, clean work. Really like the top one, prefer its sleeker shape over the massive blade of the lower one. Looking forward to see them completed!

Surprising how 2 inches less in length and 1/2 inches less in width will make a blade look.
It will be 2 or 3 months before these are finished. The bolster and handle work will take longer to do than the blade work. It will take me awhile to do all the grinding on such big blades going with a full flat grind. I will problaby go with a satin finish on the blades.

Just a little update, heat treated and tempered the 2 blades. Didn't get any picturtes of them going into the qeunch this time. It hard to handle the camera and balde ar the same time. Here the smaller on in the forge coming up to temp At temp really to quench. Here the larger one in the forge coming to temp. At temp ready to quench. Here are the 2 blades after heat treat and tempering. I had drilled all the tang holes after they were normalized and annealled.

Well Oklahoma is in the south (if my geography is correct),and that Bowie would be comforting to have so I vote The Southern Comfort. They're both looking great, looking forward to seeing them with guards and handles on.

Yes they will be for sale, just not cheap if they turn out like I want. I'm thinking about high contast ironwood for the handle scales.
