Most likely nihonto. It looks like the location is in Japan.

You are correct. Expensive hobby there no doubt.

The only thing worse that blowing $100 of tatami in a single cut is failing a cut with cost you $100.

These guys are in Japan,I casually know a couple of them. They are using Nihonto. And get most of their mats almost free,or at least not the prices not the prices we pay,its Japan after all.The stuff is thrown out like trash there. Many of the competitors are fairly new to tameshigiri. This particular group has a different "atmosphere" to it than others Im used to and have seen. They seem abit more "laidback",laughing and joking and such.

Yep, import taxes are a [female dog]. A lot of times, the taxes cost more than the item. I hear that nihonto aren't nearly as expensive over there.

Great to see the differences in technique among everyone there. I envy how much tatami they get to cut in a single session.

Yeah, that was the impression I got as too - good to see the differing levels of technique/skill. I also liked how the ones that tended to use too much force were the ones that cut the least amount of tatami, while the ones that showed good technique were able to cut well.

True! Felt a twinge of exhilaration for those that succeeded on the successful matamotegiri. I've been practicing for nearly 6 yrs and I still have to remind myself to be mindful of my technique!
I look forward to the one day that I get to cut that many at once, I've only attempted two full targets at once so far. It felt more difficult than it looked!
