Yesterday I purchased the bluray double pack for the 2 Conan movies and last night I had a chance to watch some of the special features. One of them was about sword making and they filmed and interviewed staff at Albion, I found this insight quite interesting. Now one thing I noticed that surprised me, I don't think the Atlantean is peened, they showed footage of the pommel being tightly twisted down into place using a large wooden leaver. Is this right or is it perhaps peened after it is twisted down? On a side note I told my wife that after Ive paid off the home mortgage Im getting the Destroyer Atlantean Sword hmmm but that will be about 10 years from now

Hey Paul, here is a photo from John Greybeard's Atlantian Warrior thread, I will be outside today so I might try getting a photo of the one I got as I need to take a few photos.

Thanks Dave, that's more like it, I would assume that that is keyed fit and then peened at the end. Looking forward to more pics Have you seen the clip I mention showing the pommel being twisted on?

Thanks Dave, I cant quite tell from the pic but I assume that yours is peened? And is yours from Albion or from Brendan?
I'm sure there is nothing wrong with the Albion method and no doubt its rock solid, but my preference would be for a traditional peen or to have the pommel welded on before the grip is done.
Really loving the hollowground blade of the Albion Atlantean.

Hey Paul, mine is a Greybeard ie Albion moat blade restored by John Greybeard who did all the hard work. It does cut and handle great I'd assume Albions would handle better but not by much as it is still a 7lb sword.

Thanks for the heads up, I have that dvd set and never saw the Albion scene. Even though the destroyer is heavier it most likely handle better do to the longer handle.

I actually wrote to Mick regarding this and he confirmed that it isn’t peened but it is VERY solid. I don’t know if I would be comfortable with it not being peened or welded.

Having owned a couple I can tell you it is very, very solid and would not worry about doing anything to make it let loose. You would more likely break the blade before you would loosen the pommel.
