Hi! I have a Cold Steel Jian that feels a bit too heavy in the hand. I would like to shift the POB up the blade a bit. Took it apart today and found that the Pommel is extremely heavy. Anyone know a company that sells decent Chinese Sword Fittings? I figure a lighter pommel will give me a little bit more blade presence. From memory, the pommel is weighted with lead. The simple solution would be to remove the lead, and see how the sword is with the brass pommel. I had similar thoughts. The point of balance is close in for a jian (but not ridiculously close in like some people say a jian should be). So I thought maybe a more historical balance would be better. But OTOH, the centre of percussion (AKA forward pivot point) is nicely placed very close to the tip, which is IMO ideal for a jian (and various other swords). The close PoB didn't bother in terms of handling, just historicity, so I made no changes. The overall weight of about 900g is also fine with me. (Assuming that you're talking about the Gim, www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=CS88G rather than some other CS jian.)

Interesting! I didn't notice the lead when I took it apart earlier. I'll have to look again later. That would be a nice quick fix I really like this sword - I primarily just use it for zen dry handling, so I thought why not shift the weight a bit and see how it feels?

if you lighten the pommel you may find it blade heavy
