Blade specs:
Closed: 3 1/2 in.
Open: 6 1/4 in.
Blade length: 2 5/8 in.
Weight: 3.5 oz.
Steel: SS
I just finished preliminary sharpening/polishing of a SOG Stingray folder that was given to me many years ago by one of my uncles. It is in working (but ugly) condition, hence the reason for sharpening/polishing.
As you can see from the pics, I did some sharpening/minor cosmetic work, but since it's hot out (95+ degrees), and the mosquitos were bugging me, didn't do as good a job as I could have. Anyway, as you can tell from the pictures, the handles are made out of some kind of rubber and are falling apart - I need to find some way of replacing them.
Also, the blade still has some high spots (from the factory). I was unable to polish all of it consistently with my Japanese water stones, maybe some high grit sand paper will work better next time.
more high spots
While I was able to sharpen the blade, it's not as sharp as I can get my other folders including a Buck 110 (stolen from my SUV), Gerber Gator, or Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Covert (spring assist) among others in my collection. I tried to get the bevel on the edge as consistent as possible, using my tried and true method I've been using for many years, but for some reason, the edge on this knife doesn't get anywhere near as sharp as the others I've sharpened.
Conclusion:
I did manage to shave some of my arm hair off, but had a hard time cutting through paper or even whittling green wood. I don't know if it's the steel they used on this folder or if it's just because of the overall thickness, but it's really bumming me out that a knife I thought would be a good EDC once cleaned/sharpened/fixed is not really going to do the job.
On a scale of A-F, this one is a definite "C" based on my findings.
** I emailed SOG and said they don't have the parts for it anymore, but I could send it back to them and get store credit for the original price it was sold for. I'll probably end up doing that unless someone here convinces me otherwise! **
*** I sent it back to SOG and replaced it with a SOG Vulcan Vl-03 Tanto folder... really nice blade. I'll write up a review on it soon***
