Before I got married and had a kid I used to keep an Atlanta Cutlery "Qama" by my bed, in addition to a 9mm Glock. At 17-1/2" of blade, and 2" wide, I suppose that qualifies as a short sword. Not necessarily the best choice of bladed weapons, since it has even less of a guard than a Roman Gladius (easy to cut yourself in a combat situation), but I really didn't know any better than that back then. I AM considering finding someone I can learn sabre techniques from, though. I think that, if I was going to have a sword as a backup or alternative to my pistol, I'd pick a cutlass. Short blade makes it more maneuverable in tight quarters, and the half or full basket handguard could be a substitute for a knuckleduster in a pinch.

I have a Colt m1911 .45 pistol (hollow points FTW) in my nightstand drawer along with a USMC Ka-Bar fighting knife across the room i have this sword i made while being bored one day... put in about 2 hours of work - - made it out of mild steel. weighs around 3lb, balance is kinda crappy (6 inch from the hilt) but for about $10 worth of steel, its one hell of a beater sword. soon to be my CS shamshir(if i see it worthy)

I don't see any problem with cutting a criminal's head off with a guillotine but then I think that is being generous personally.
This thread makes me really worried that one of you guys is going to kill someone out of sheer paranoia. I don't keep any guns or knives anywhere near my bed, I have a wooden bokken and a staff but my hands are far more lethal than a knife or a gun. Just my opinion. Next someone is going to say they have a blunderbuss or something ridiculous like that. Then again most of you guys live in america so maybe you aren't so paranoid after all.

Then again most of you guys live in america so maybe you aren't so paranoid after all. Now I keep the Oniyuri and my new M&P 9mm next to the bed. Remember Mr Bloodwraith. Our ancestors in America were kicked out of every decent country at the time. The most interesting thing about Americans? Somewhere in our families, a family member got the living crap beat out of him by a foreign government. That's why he/she came here. We're a nation of mutts (or "blended lineage" as some people will say) who are making sure we don't get our butts kicked again.

Cen: I wasn't having a go at your lineage, more speaking to how much more dangerous america is for things like homw invasions than most other 1st and 2nd world countries. In Australia home invasion is not such an issue and anyone breaking into my house out here is going to be confronted by two martial artists and re-enactors and one fat guy who we aren't sure of his combat abilities but oh well, he can alway sit on them. I don't believe in guns (except the mosin and that isn't for home defense) but I like the idea of a billy club and a small shield. Night stick is also a good idea although the more inocuos the weapon the easier it is to claim self defense.

I have my Cheness shura Wakizashi and my CS Gurkha kukri under my bed, all my other swords and knives are elsewhere in my room. If a robber came in ofcourse i would be a little frightened. I would pray and stay behind a wall and look at the robber to try to anticipate his paths. When he comes near the corner where i'm hiding, He would most likely be pointing his gun somwhere as an act of being prepared, once i see the hand appear i will take a hack at it with the sword, I would kick i'm to the ground and stab him in the leg. I would tell him to not move or else ill stab him again, then I would yell at my mom to call the police. When police come they will probly send me in to the office using the sword as evidence. Then my mom will be my witness to help explain to police that it was total self-defense.

What you think you will do and what you will do are two completely different things unless you train to react without thinking. I know practically what I would do in situations because I have been in them, I think the majority of you would be p****ing yourselves in terror hoping the guy went away. Unless you have been in a situation where the SHTF you can't know what you will and will not do. It is all well and good to say that you would try and take the hand off but it is much harder to fight someone or even take a swing at them than you think. First of all if you have a conscience it will be saying "I really don't want to kill this guy" which will make you hesitate and possibly cost you your life, second your opponent will be moving around possibly in a dark room and you won't know until the last second how they are armed or what they are going to do. Like I said if you don't drill or you haven't been in the situation then you don't know if you will act. Another problem with swords and knives is cutting someone who may be infected with HIV or something nasty. Better to hit them with a club or something than cause open wounds also with a club you can strike without hesitating.

Yeah I know how to react in a situation like this because I take Kung Fu and they do intense training on how to deal with a situation and how to deal with fear and adrenaline. Once I help my friend move some stuff to his new house, and when we got there, I went upstairs to put stuff away. When I was walking downstairs my friends mom screamed, and when I went down I saw the robber trying to run out the sliding door at the base of the stairs. When I got completely down I kicked him on his side and he fell on the porch and ran away. It was one of the scariest times of my life, but I had no time to think and my mind said to kick him, so I did. I think it could have been a mistake because if he had a gun he probly would have shot me after I kickeded him. Crazy

I grow up in the ghetto getting shot at is just part of life I gave up fearing death a long time ago death is just a consequence of birth ...... if I die protecting my family than I did my duty as a father and husband and can die with honor ....... how do you think I got the name "swordboy" I didn't give it to my self ....... I've starred down a mugger with a 32 and made him bite off part of his tongue with the butt of my katana ........ in short I know how I will react ...... calmly with deliberate intent I did all my fearing and crying when I was a child ........ now I have some thing more than my self to fight for I will attack with no regard for pain or my own survival ..........

I was in the military for a short while (medical discharge due to an injury during a training exercise). One thing that helps to overcome that hesitance is to look at your enemy as VERMIN. If you look at military propaganda though the centuries, one thing it all has in common is it dehumanizes your opponents (NOT always a good thing - a good/bad example being Nazi propaganda's portayal of Jews and Eastern Europeans). If you look at that housebreaker not as a person but rather as a vicious animal that is out to hurt you and/or your family, it will become much easier, I think, to do what needs to be done.
