I just ordered a second hand Windlass Pirate Companion cutlass from KoA with the thought of making a new guard and handle.
I got some 1/8th inch sheet metal (which in hindsight is way too thick) and am fashioning a guard from it. I'll post some pics of the progress in the custom thread as soon as I get the sword in and start to assemble it.

I hit the link so I could make a guess without spoilers and think it's 14ga. 12 is more reasonable a guess though, especially if this were not tempered, it would be a bit bendy if struck.
