But are they decent? I'm wondering if anyone has laid hands on any....they might be chromed aluminum...or just junk. The pictures of some are pretty though.

My understanding is that Universal is a somewhat related company to WEI, and shares WEI's virtues and vices. Good looking, poorly balanced. This impression is from Dave Kelly, mostly, and he's not a "modder." Sometimes I wonder if enough could be taken off the front (in terms of distal taper) to scooch the point of balance back some.

These weapons have been coming in pretty slowly at KoA. There are a few in this second batch that I'm curious about, but I own most of what I wanted out of what's present, and there are four that haven't got to KoA I would seriously consider getting.
Universal and WEI are fraternal forges. Their output is pretty much the same, Universal has the larger selection.
These are real carbon steel swords. Whether you get 1040 or 1050 is iffy. Fit and finish is excellent. They excel as display pieces.
What's lacking is distal taper. All of these products are overbuilt in the margins with relatively thick hilt castings and ahistoric blade profiles. They will cut. KoA will even sharpen them for you. But they are all mediocre handling compared to their historic counterparts.

Hello all!
I handled that Napoleonic carabinier sword and it is a disgusting SLO. Heavier than 2 crowbars put together and a waste of money. At least you know you can obliterate someone's skull with it, provided you lift it and not break your own wrist in the process. Definitely not recommended.
On the other hand, the ''light'' swords like the Hungarian military and the French line officers swords might seem to perform better.

Huh, 3lb. 4.4 oz. seems pretty weighty for this blade- But looking at this image, I can see why it is soo heavy.. Is it just me, or does there seem to be an imperfection right past the groove? Actually the groove seems misaligned and there appear to be two flat spots like whoever shaped the blade let the sander rest on the blade for too long?

Somewhere on the SBG boards I have a review of the WEI Cuirassier compared to an historic one.
An actual Cuirassier sword comes in right at 3 lbs. There are some drastic differences in the stock and taper of the original and the replica. Historic blades start with much thicker stock then shape it and reduse it much finer. The foible blade on original is only something like 1.6mm; half what the replica is.
PoB on the originals is 4 inches closer to the hand, consequently the 3 lbs seem to be very manageble.
Shame, but you really can't gauge historic swords very well based on a Johdpur rep; in most cases I have handled personally.

Interesting. I'm tempted, Universal seem to be the only way to get a battle ready Pattern 1796 HCS, and that is one sword I want in my collection.

The Universal/KoA route is particularly attractive for North American buyers. Direct sales, such as History Relics (WEI) suffers from increased costs for shipping of the last year and the lack of a sharpening service.
I have a Cold Steel m1796 LCS and a WEI HCS myself.

Anyone laid hands on one of these? kultofathena.com/product.asp?ite ... rmy+Sword+ The Russo-Japanese Kyu Gunto Army Sword. The grip is leather, so I assume it can be redyed etc...I'm concerned it may be junk.

It doesn't look so bad but I too am afraid it might serve only as a display piece rather than something functional.
When in doubt, don't waste your money.
