Hey all new guy with an old sword I had made several years back,it's a bit of long story and I hope this is the right place for it but here goes:
Eight dollar mountain foundry is/was a knifemaking shop in the pacific northwest that I'm not so sure it around anymore;the guy who ran it Dale Sanderson, was getting up in the years and wasn't in the best shape when I got to know him with my order, last I checked I think his son was running it.
At the time I was looking hard for a "day to day" use sword as I have plenty of room here in WV to carry one and use it just that all others I had tried weren't up to being used hard...or were too big (a Del Tin Viking sword proved that carrying a 39 inch sword sucked) then I found EDMF and called the guy-yes this was in 2006 but email was still new to me.
some back and forth showed Dale was willing to stick his claim to fame, cast aluminum "trench knife" handles on anything but wasn't sure he could make a sword blade, that's fine I said I'll get one and you put a handle on it....
A lot of research and then some testing netted a good sturdy cutlass blade from Windlass Steelcrafts, the all brass handle was a piece of junk but the blade was good, tempered right, and me beating on it showed it wouldn't break.
This is the result:
I've beaten this sword mercilessly it's got rust, gunk, mud, blood on it and used it on several varmint hunts to finish off possums and a few woodchucks, thing taught me a sword cuts surprisingly well and there's no way you want to get in the way of one.
I've refinished the handle once and re-wrapped it once as well,it's a good tough sword.
And yep I'm crazy enough to use a sword hunting-I make the WV folk nervous being I'm originally from California, they don't expect a sword swinging, gun using guy to be from there!
