Not sure if this really should be in the knives section as such, but has anyone seen the massive sirupate for sale on eBay at the moment? 2 have 30" blades andb1 has a 28" blade look fantastic to me pity I can't afford them! Pretty heavy at approximately 1.7kg but heck they would chop like nothing else,I wonder how they would go compared to other swords on tatami and such? Might even be a candidate for those giant cardboard tubes of Avery's :-)

Not sure how I feel about "Ex-Gurkha Khukuri House" but those are some nice looking knives. Uh, yeah...knives. Here's the sirupate section of their website: www.nepalkhukurihouse.com/Produc ... ry&CatID=3 Prices aren't significantly different, I imagine shipping will be the same, but I'm the impatient sort so rather than wait for the auction to end I'd just buy outright from their website. That is, if I had the money.

The huge ones are for ornament or sacrificial beheading of animals, and tend to be unfit for fighting or general utility use. Just too heavy. Might work for super-heavy-duty backyard cutting. But big kukri don't have to be too heavy. Long slender sirupate can be nice. FOr example: It's basically a wakizashi length kukri. It's a little heavier, 771g vs 742g. Balances a little further out, about 16cm vs 10cm, but at that weight, that's not a problem at all. Modern large kukri tend to have oversized grips. Normal-sized kukri grips would be better. This kukri: is IMO far too heavy. 1.55kg, and worse to wield than 1.6kg swords. I don't think it would cut as well as a 1.6kg sword either. Might be tougher. Attachments:

These are definitely not fighting knives, by any stretch. As you say, they're largely ceremonial. I can't imagine carrying one of these around and expecting to use it as a weapon on a regular basis, though really it's not significantly different in shape and function from a lot of other blades out that way. Still, a crazy-long sirupate is a fun thing to add to any kuk nut's wishlist, but I'm thinking of going for this one first: www.thekhukurihouse.com/catalog/ ... 313536fc98 From the same vendor as the original knives comes this: nepalkhukurihouse.com/191/36-inc ... hukuri.php I'm still trying to figure out if these aren't rebrandings of the same group of people...but either way, I'm liking KH better so far. Something about the "Ex-" in the other company bothers me... Still, really interesting knives for their own sake.

I have a Nepal Khukuri House one with a 15 inch blade and dragon etchings. Handles alright and not very heavy.
I don't know if it is just me, but several I have handled feel pretty much neutral in hand.

I don't know I still think they'd be OK for the length of blade they're reasonably light for a kukri, sure you wouldn't fence with one but it would work alright if you got used to it. The ones on eBay I was looking at are a far cry in size and weight compared to the Buffalo beheading ceremonial ones. At 3.7 pound they're probably not dissimilar to Zombie Tools swords :-)

LOL, Random! The "Buff Head"? Well, at 6500g/14.3lbs, I guess that IS a novelty, *I* couldn't even swing that thing more than once, and I'm in purty good shape! Oh, and that "Ex-Gurkha" place is NOT KHHI. Pete, if ya want a huge sirupate, go for it! But look around. To me, KHHI (KH) seemed to have the best quality for the buck, so I'm waiting for a couple to come in from them. Mine are slightly customized. They'll make almost anything you design. I've been planning my kuk collection, and in doing mockups, I've found that 1800g/4lbs is about my limit for something I could swing continuously. These things handle a lot differently that a sword of that weight, as you probably know. I found that 1250g/2.75lbs is max fighting khukuri weight for me. That equates to a 15" Bhojpure (fat) style or about a 21"-22.5" Sirupate. I think a kuk should be heavy, and after 22.5" or so in a sirupate, it gets to be a lot, even though they are about 2/3 the weight of the full bellied kuks. Look for the Panawal/Sirupana designs, those are the ones that are full-tang and riveted. No matter how much anyone swears the stick-tang khukuris will hold together forever? I don't trust them. Or just buy something and get on a khukuri kick!

I prefer under 800g. What my practical maximum weight would be, I don't know. About 1kg is usable for sure. 800g is heavy for a knife. Here are some very nice looking antique big kukri, with lengths and weights: www.swordforum.com/forums/showth ... ost1173890

Hi, Timo! Dang, I got lost over there with those links! Yeah, 1250g at 15" is comfortable to me, but if you look at the Cold Steel video that they link, that one is an anemic 625g at 12"! And it wreaks PURE HAVOC! Imagine twice that weight! The 12" I have coming will be around 1000g, so it should be very fast. The other is 9" and 600g. I'll be doing a review on them as soon as they get here. Meanwhile, I'll stop 'jacking the thread!

Hi, Pete. I was just doing some looking around on their site, and I'd stay away from "Ex-Gurkha Khukuri House" if I were you. Seems that they are stealing designs and product names from both KHHI and HI. People like that don't deserve our business. Stick with KHHI, or if you want to pay a lot more, HI. At least they have the good stuff and aren't out to scam anyone.

Tora blades is the way to go for kukris, they might be superior to even HI, since unlike all other manufacturers, Tora blades kukris have correct blade thickness and distal taper. They are based on antique kukri from 1900-1970. They are somewhat like the Albions/Atrims of the kukri world, while Kukri house and HI would be Darksword or Gen II. I've just placed an order for two Toras.
Don't get me wrong I have heard good things about HI too. They have a reputation for extreme toughness and quality, but they are heavier than antique kukri where.

I am in the small minority although I think the Kuhkri house American Eagle handle kukris are a great design. I wish HI or Tora offered some non-traditional handles as well as that handle style with the small guard is really nice for usage

Nilfgaardian, Tora has some great stuff, but they only have a few models and they're always out of stock! And HI is known for a heavier khukuri, and I like that, to a point. But I'm really developing a hatred for those traditional, bell-shaped, stick-tang handles! Let us know when you get yours in, I'd like to hear about them. Dr. Whom, I've decided that I'd rather keep my fingers than not, so all of my kuks will have that Eagle/Victor style quillon on the front, as well as Western grips. I also like lanyard holes, but not for a wrist strap. Those are freakin' dangerous! People ought to think of where that kuk will go if you swing and let go of it! I have a couple of kuks on order from KHHI, so we'll see what they look like soon. Heck, they should be shipping anytime now. Edit to add: Wow, I just looked at the Toras again, and I never realized that they are so incredibly LIGHT! No offense to anyone, but I think a khukuri should be HEAVY! Since they were never in stock, I blew them off. Anyway, the Toras are still on Pre-Order, so if anyone wants one, go over there! Looks like they range from $124 to $177 shipped.
