My brother was given this blade (no hilt, handle, or scabbard)from a friend and knowing that I collect and research swords he brought it to me to try and find out what it is. unfortunately I don't know much about modern or European style blades (I focus more on Asian and Middle Eastern blades). So I am wondering if you guys could help me out with this one.
First off the blade is an odd shape. It looks like it is curved it the wrong why until the last 7 inches when it straightens out again. It is also really thick at almost a full centimeter were the blade meats the tang, and it stays thick until the last 7 inches when it flattens out. This suggests to me that it was meant to be used mainly from the point instead of the edge.
Also it does not feel like the edge has ever been sharpened, but the point is definitely sharp. Normally if I find a blade with no evidence of sharpening it was intended as a ceremonial or dress piece, but this blade is vary plain so it does not look like it was intended for that.
The tang is also odd. It is thick and wide like the blade and has 6 holes in it. One big one, presumably for attaching the handle, and 5 small ones that I am not sure about. Now the size and thickness of the tang to me suggest that it had a heavy handle, like a basket hilt.
The blade is 22 ¾ inches long plus another 4 inches of Tang, giving it a 26 ¾ overall length. It is stamped with a lower case "g" on the blade, both on the side and the spine just before the tang. It also has what looks like a crescent moon and a "5" stamp into the tang.
Below are some pictures, any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
