I'm planning to buy some 14 oz vegetable tanned leather in order to make bracer's and the like.
What sort of dyes or finishes will I need in order to turn out a decent pair?

Here you go: www.springfieldleather.com/WebPage.asp?pageURL=dyes_leatherFor armor get the big 32 oz bottles. $15 for the basic Instatutional Dye. Use a sponge brush to apply. Don't get it on your hands, it will take weeks to get off. It drys in 5 min. They have other options there too. Ask Keven over there for additional advice on what is best for your needs. Get your leather from the same place. $90 for a side of low grade leather 13 oz. That is about 20 sq ft.

What about polishing. How do I get the leather nice and smooth like it always seems to be in shops or websites?

They should have a polish at the site I gave you. I don't see it though. I am sure if you ask them they will have it.

The two biggest tools I would suggest are a beveler and an edge slicker. Cut the leather with a razor blade (several light passes are better than a few heavy passes). Then take the beveler and it will take off the rough right angles which will dig into your skin. Do both sides, and all edges. Then take the edge slicker, and slick down the edges, making the fibers lay down and look smooth. After dying, take a rag and just buff the entire piece with neutral shoe polish. It will protect and seal the leather, as well as shine it.
