Hi folks!
I’ve made some new knives that I thought I’d share with you. They’re not an attempt to be historical or belonging to a specific tradition, but are rather an amalgamation of things I like.
The first one is made from an old file I found in my grandmother’s barn. Blade length is 10 cm. The handle is made from buffalo horn, stag antler, copper and birch burl that I found in the woods near I live. I boiled the burl in salt water for a couple of hours and let it try for 6 weeks or so before using it. It’s a very nice looking piece of wood, especially after being oiled (I used boiled linseed oil).
I had originally planned to use this knife, but I couldn’t bring myself to do that after all the work I had put into it. Instead I put it on display and decided that I’d make another smaller and slightly simpler knife.
And here is the result. It’s made from a piece of leaf spring I found in my grandmother’s barn (that place is filled with old rusty tools). Blade length is 5.8 cm, and it is 2.2 cm wide at its widest. The handle is made out of stag antler, copper and a piece of birch burl from my landlord’s wood pile. I also made myself a simple scabbard for this knife that I died red.
Oh yeah, I also made this tiny knife with a scabbard for my girlfriend from the same leaf spring while I was at it. The handle materials on this knife are boiled birch burl and horn. She decorated the scabbard with some simple butterflies and helped out a bit with the draw filing on this knife.
And finally a picture of some of the stuff I’ve made or customized this year (hauberk still in progress though). The pipe bowl is made out of some spare burl and the stem is some unknown wood I dyed using iron dust solved in vinegar. That was a fun project.
