Hey guys, just bought a sword from AVCON (an anime and gaming convention) for around $350 and sadly its had a few... problems. The blade has a unique black colour with brown waves through it, iss 1095 damascus steal and is clay tempered.Sadly, its habaki is not aligned correctly with the blade, the saya is loose and rattly, and the blade comes out of the tsuba at an angle that isnt exactly 180 degrees. Is there any way to fix these problems?

short answer, Yes.If youve got some tools and are somewhat handy. Pop the mekugi pegs and you can disassemble it. check the habaki fit and angle and file the blade accordingly until it fits flush, the saya can be shimmed maybe using a thin piece of leather fix the tusba angle the sane way as the habaki fit.

A little off topic here, but do you by any chance know the manufacturer?

Not sure AVCON is the best place to buy a sword, the coloured blade is not unique, the faults you bring up shows the quality control is poor, I would suggest you disassemble the sword and ensure it is safe before you swing it around.

Im not entirely sure who the manufacturer is, the business card I was given with the blade listed wicked-stuff. The website is wicked-stuff.com.au

350$ is quite a lot for what you have described. Similar if not identical swords can be bought from swordsmith668 on eBay for about 150$. Hopefully you can fix it up so you can use it at least. If you want to get the mekugi out without breaking them you should use a special tool for that (mekuginuki I think it's called).

I just looked at some of the blades swordsmith 688 has, they do appear to be black, but are quite unlike the one I posses. I have notified the company of the defects and they are going to replace the blade. Is it possible for me to post an image of the blade? It looks more like intricate wood than metal.

It's easy posting images here. The quickest way is selecting upload as attachment while typing your post in the full editor. That's what I always do since the other way of posting pictures results in them getting cropped.

Never seen a blade like that before (brown blade). These types of coloured blades are quite stunning but the colour does not stand up to use. It is created by etching using various chemicals. Since the blade is folded using different types of steel and the steel reacts differently to etching depending on the type, this colour/pattern is formed. The colour will probably not stand up to scratches during cutting however, and will also be damaged by sharpening/polishing. Also keep in mind that since the blade has differential hardening and has a bo-hi (fuller), it will be susceptible to bending on miss-aligned cuts. You should perhaps use this only on bottles and other light targets.
