It is to protect the hand holding the shield and also to help keep the middle of the shield together. If you lose on edge of the shield you can still use it but if it breaks in half, it will be unusable.
But the boss was primarily to protect the hand holding the shield.

I'm about to turn the Hanweii buckler into a boss on a viking sheild, but now I notice a long wooden handle on others - probably more historically correct - I think the larger circumference handle with square edges would make it more manueverable, too. www.viking-shield.com/I've already bought the buckler, though, and I don't have another boss, so here goes....

It's possible that buicklers first developed from the bosses of "Viking" shields, since the first bucklers appeared at the same place and time that the last of the "Viking" shields were known.
The MRL shield is heavier than the originals would have been, since archaeology shows that the planks in the originals measured about 1/4" thick only, probably with a rawhide cover.

Well, I went ahead and ordered the Ibelin shield. Maybe I will do a review and finally get my sword reviews done also. I am always busy, 60 hour work week, 4 screaming kids, and a demanding wife.

I have the Windless domed Steel Shield and I'm very happy with it. A very nice piece.
