+1 from me too, no one should be subject to another's whim. i used to be a smiter myself, 'til i changed my wicked ways, and as a recovered smiter, i must say sometimes i smote for idiotic reasons. if someone smites someone, there should be a damn good reason and they should admit it.
though i disagree with sl4k's reason for smiting, at least he had the decency to say it up front like a man.

Hey guys, keep the personal trashing statements out of it. If you disagree with someone's take on a historical matter, that's well and good. Disagree passionately even. But this is a friendly forum and people need to be proactive as such.
If you have an issue with how someone is acting on the forum, please approach me or one of the other mods about it.
EDIT: I do think that it is better when someone is up front about why they are smiting, certainly better than "smites from the shadows" - but there's no need to be antagonistic at the same time. We don't want another flame war, do we?

Well said mate, I have to agree with you have a thumbs up thumbs upAnyway back to the topic at hand, I have to agree that these weapons would have been functional before looks, this is the way that it goes throughout history, except in some special cases. The flamberge rapier served a functional purpose, what that is we don't know, not even the so called experts can agree. The Germans were at the forefront of technical advances in weaponry as were other countries at this time in history. There must be a reason that the germans invented the flammenschwert apart from the fact that it was fashionable, I really don't think you are giving them enough credit Ramm, after all the guy walking around with the pretty sword would still want to be able to protect himself sufficiently. I saw you make an attack on swept hilt rapiers, if you think they served no other purpose than to look pretty, you need to go and read a few more historical books on the form and function of the swept hilt. There is a reason that hilts were diversified and it wasn't for looks alone. Guaranteed there is some vanity involved in the form of swords but never in the function of them.

Nah, I'm not rushing it because of this argument. I'm having too much fun carving dragons and the like. Besides, its not really a flamberg in any historical sense so its irrelevant to this argument. He doesnt have to. +1, Ramm, for bringing up an excellent discussion with redeeming academic qualities. +1 from me too, no one should be subject to another's whim. I think I'm gonna vomit. Thats a perfect example of team exaltation, where it has just become a popularity / buddy system that works against newbies. The whole "And back at you" thing - thats 4 exalts given cos of 1 notified smite - I think that is going to encourage shadow smiting if anything. "Oh you smote me in the light, thats going to net 4 exalts. Though if you shadow smite it sticks. " Sl4K has a perfectly valid opinion - I'd karma him for it but then I'd be a hippocrite. Have another Thumbs Up. thumbs up

Uh, redeeming academic qualities? What might those be? I don't see any redeeming academic qualities.
We are all subject to others whims in our daily lives and in our dealings with people, so that was a slightly ridiculous comment mate.

Whaever you say (keep shadow smiting me, go on. You'll deal with Paul when he gets back ) You know, every time you post about shadow smiting you are perpetuating the cycle and showing just how bloody immature you are. Besides I don't smite or karma so don't look at me.

I'm just pretty much ignoring this piss fest that you all seem to want to fight about That's hard to believe, considering you just posted in it. Did a little bird tell you it was going on? ...but now that you mention it, that is a darn good idea. I think we've all had our say, and it's time for ALL of us to move on. Guys, put yourself in Ramm's shoes and I think you will see that he has taken a lot of flak, and taken it pretty darn well considering. Ramm, put yourself in our shoes and try to see that we are all tired of hearing about your Karma score. (If it's that important to you then how about earning it back by helping out other forumites with their sword related issues.) After all: we are all here because we love swords, not to raise our scores, and become whores....sorry. the rhyming was just too perfect not to write down. Maybe we can all laugh about it and become friends again?

Maybe we can all laugh about it and become friends again? Good way to end this off, Slav. I think that those were great words of wisdom. The karma system is simply a game, nothing more or less. I think alot of people could stand to take it less seriously (and I don't think that either sl4k or Ramm - who both make great points here and add much to the forum - would like to have each other harassed by their friends or "supporters"). But the negative comments that go along with that discussion should stop here - and, since this thread has become totally derailed, I think we'd best put it down. THREAD LOCKED
