Hi, I will soon receive a han jian from jin shi. It was hard to take a decision between the tang jian and the han jian, the tang jian is elegant and seem to have a very comfortable, katana-like handle. But I liked the han jian the most, aestetically speaking, and decided to give it a try. The only thing that worries me is that round handle...
So, anyone having a jian with this type of handle? Is it difficult to have a good edge allignment? Do we get used to it or is it still more difficult to have a good cutting angle after much practice?

I'd like to know too. I've avoided ordering anything with a round handle because I *guess* they would be harder to cut with.

Yes, they're harder to keep the edge alignment, especially during hard impact. It will rotate in one's hand. However, telling the blade alignment from the guard is not difficult. The only difficulty lies in keeping the blade alignment through the impact.

I see... now I wonder:
Does the round handle serves any special purpose,
or is it just ''less evolved'' ?

It might well be a modernism. To serve the purpose of cheap manufacture. I haven't seen an antique Han sword with a round grip. I have seen Qin and Han sword grips that are flattened. I have seen Han swords with flat pommels that almost certainly had flattened grips. There are plenty of Han round pommels. There are earlier bronze jian with round grips (and bronze jian with flattened grips, too) and round pommels. These suggest that the round pommel iron Han jian might have had round grips, but is there hard evidence for round grips? OTOH, there is evidence for flattened grips with round pommels. One such sword (found in Korea, but supposedly Chinese) is shown by Yetts www.jstor.org/stable/863051 , also in Trousdale, fig 17, hdl.handle.net/10088/1332 . For an example of a flattened grip, flat pommel sword, see chineseswords2.freewebspace.com/custom3.html

Yesterday I've received my han jian from jin-shi. I tried it on the cardboard of the shipping. I don't have any problem with the round handle. The flatted guard helps very much. I do not feel any difference in cutting between my ronin katana or hanwei tinker bastard and this jian.(this about the feel of handle) Plus the han jian has a very good handling. Is a pleasure cut with it. So don't worry. You will be very happy with it. Like me!

If you don't mind, might I ask around what you paid for the Han Jian? I ask because they have a Dao that I might be interested in.

The round handle was for not letting the sword slip from one's hand by leashing your wrist with a rope. But later on, it is more for decoration purpose.

OK, so I received my Han jian by 26th june. After some dry handling there was some rattling, so I did not cut with it. I'm lucky that Garrett is such a gentleman, because I will receive another one soon. I disassembled the first one and will send pics to him to help avoid future problems. He really stands behind his products, that's something precious nowadays. I can say from dry handling that I love this sword, it feel so powerful. It is more a battlefield sword than a court sword for sure. Valandur: mine is T10, Differentialy hardened and folded and I paid 450ish. AXords: I don't see why leashing wouldn't work with an oval section handle?
