Does anyone know where I can can buy a piece of 1045 carbon steel or 5160 spring steel for $20-$40 in Ohio? I've called multiple steel companies, and there charging $80-$130 for a piece of 1045 carbon steel that's 1/4" thick, 2" wide and 42' long... Anyone have any suggestions?

Consider scrap yards and junk leaf springs.

look up the NJ steel baron he has 5160 in the size you want for less than $30 before shipping and the shipping isn't bad at all

Jersey steel baron and Jantz knifemaking supplies both has affordable high quality steels. Jersey steel baron carries logner 48 inch pieces for roughly 50 bucks after shipping. Jantz has some smaller cuts and various thicknesses.

Busy street corners.
This month I've scored four more car springs by just looking at the ground.
