In various threads here I've heard suggestions for magnifying glasses, jewelers loupes, and microscopes. I'm thinking of getting something in the new month or two.
Besides the relative merits of different categories, the other big question is how much to spen -- a quick search in Amazon shows loupes starting under $3 and going over $90, for example.
I personally would much prefer not to depend on disposable batteries. Rechargeable AAA, AA or 9v is ok, or room light.
FWIW, I'm currently at the "crappy or passable" stage. "good or very good" is for later, I hope.

if you want to check edge sharpness do cutting tests, will it slice paper, if so, how about thick leather like a belt, thick rope, will it cut a plastic bottle without blowing it up or batting it, all if so, its good, if not it might need toutched up.

If you want to drive yourself nuts over analyzing an edge....go cheap first. I have one of these, and it works well enough you will either curse and throw it away...or learn sharpening. www.amazon.com/SE-MW10087L-Brass ... microscope 3 bucks.... Hate me later when you're stressing over 1 micron scratch patterns.

So I've used a belt sander with leather strops before and it appears to have gotten down to the edge. It was already paper cutting sharp to start with (kitchen knife), but it wasn't hair shaving sharp like my other swords and knives.
I have a jewelers loupe that's 20x and 40x. I couldn't see anything on the 20x, but at the 40x, right at the edge I saw a different grain pattern, which means I didn't touch that edge. So in this case, the jewelers loupe actually helped figure out what the problem was.

Thanks for the suggestions... I've tried a few things and so far the best I have laid hands on is this puppy www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007QR ... UTF8&psc=1 no special reason to think is is any better than any other usb microscope, but you can take the hood off to get much closer, and the whole category should make it easy to post pictures of whatever edges I get that are worth posting. Here's my mousepad from as close as it goes with the hood on max closeup with the hood off edge of a sacrificial cheapo knife I am practicing on I need to get better with lighting & glare. ------ Some things that did not work www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A75 ... UTF8&psc=1 This lemon claims to be 40x but is only about 2x. Overstated claims seem to be pretty common, like "10x" being only 3x, but that is excessive. Also, the light seems to have a flaky contact. Sigh. I really liked the idea of using AAA batteries because I have a charger. Refuse to buy anything that requires disposable batteries. I also tried the Radio Shack pocket microscope (which also uses AAA) and I could get only a blurry image with my glasses off and nothing with my glasses on. Maybe it was just a bad unit. BTW, is seems identical to Amazon / Carson www.amazon.com/Carson-Micro-Max- ... 51MZAVZR1O ------ Meanwhile, I'm considering getting a BelOMO loupe. www.amazon.com/BelOMO-Triplet-Lo ... 5N5VKB0E93 They seem to have a good reputation and their "10x" really is 10x. But they only make the kind of loupe that you have to hold up to your eye, using the other hand to hold the subject close to it. I'd much rather get the kind that you lay over the subject. Anybody have any experience with BelOMO ?

make your smart phone take macro images "By using a lens from an old DVD player, you can enhance your camera’s zoom as shown in the image above. Literally, all you do is remove the lens from the player and place it on top of your phone’s camera as shown below. That’s it! It’s that simple! " hacknmod.com/hack/how-to-5x-zoom ... macro-mod/
