Does anyone have pics or a link to shimming a pommel or hilt?
Odingard mentioned Albion does this to ensure all their swords are tight and ring...
As I've got a project blade, I figured I'd give it a try. I have to assume the shims should be steel, not brass?

Albions aren't shimmed nomnally, they're press fit and wedged. For additional security you can back peen guards and pommels.
It is true though that many originals are shimmed so it certainly was common practice.

A few of the Czech swords I have taken apart were shimmed with a hard wood.

That sounds like a.. painful job  It could explain why some Czech swordmakers fail to deliver a placed order in time perhaps

Good info. I've got some experience with shims, but this is a good excuse to replace my old micrometer with a digital. I'll post pics as I go, this won't be a fast process as it's taken me the better part of 3 months to polish a spearhead to my satisfaction.
Now, does it matter if I use a stainless shim on a mild steel pommel/guard? Just trying to make sure I don't cause myself issues down the road that can be avoided.

Ok, good to know I can use scrap stainless or whatever steel I find.
