I was searching around Youtube yesterday and found this cool clip from a movie called Azumi. The main character had a Katana that had a small tanto like blade hidden in the Tsuka that could pop out for a surprise attack. I have been wondering wether or not it would be possible to make something similar but instead of the other blade popping out have the other blade as a continued part of the tang. To really hide it for a good surprise attack I think 14-15 inch handle overall but with only 9 inches as the true hilt and the rest is a Saya disguised to look like the rest of the hilt with a very tight fit between the Saya and Habaki so it won’t simply fly off. The only real issue I could think of is how to make the tsuka core have a tight fit but still allowing the sword to be disassembled and that it might look a bit odd with a 2 Fuchi in the middle of the hilt but other than that it seem workable. I don’t think a Japanese smith would touch this with a 10 inch pole but I know of a couple of Chinese forges who might. What do you all think; dose it sound like something that would actually work out?

I think it would work. My pal has an old war katana that has a pop out tanto from the hilt. If that works I can't see why that won't.

There is a "working" replica of that katana. Search topicool.com. I'm not certain if that's very practical, but that's what I remember at the current moment.

Hey, i have the same idea. I downloaded the movie last year and it's a great movie. Lots of blood and gore. You remember my review of my DH shirasaya? I have a 15" handle and my sword's tang only reaches from 9" to 10 1/2". I was thinking of placing a tanto or any small combat knife in the remaining 6" or 5". I just need a strong spring and a small knife. The other problem i face is that i have to cut open the tsuka to place the spring in which i think will lessen the wood of the tsuka. Well, that's the only problem. Any suggestions? I would gladly do this experiment if anyone would give me directions ;D

First off, how you're going to use a tanto blade hidden in saya at the end of your tsuka? If you're not going to make it a "pop out & hide" then you'd have to unsheathe it during a fight ( i know fight isn't really the best choice of words, but i don't know what else to use here ) which would already be rather impractical and then there's also the problem of having another blade in a not so great place ( which applies to pop out version too ). I guess it's a nice idea if you want to get yourself cut by that hidden tanto and only time you could use it against your target is when using the handle to hit someone ( which is a rather rare situation ).

I see what you are saying bytheway, I would make the “saya” for the Tanto look like part of the tsuka with same and ito and have it tight enough that it could be held on the join. It is more of a surprise attach that you would use in an attempt to save your skin if you were loosing. You would have to be careful when using the other blade but with a bit of training I think it would be possible. I have been thinking about it’s construction a bit more and I reckon that two sperate blades whose tangs meet inside the tsuka would be easier to disassemble than having them both one blade.

I always figured that it would be better to have the end dagger be forged as part of the tang. It wouldn't be like the movie, but then none of their swords were very realistic. (I'd still like a white katana without a tsuba. I know it's kind of a bad idea, but...)
