I just recieved my first Katana (Cas Hanwei Bushido Katana) and I love it, but the metal is completely covered in some sort of grease. Do I need to just let it be there for protection or something? I only bought the sword for decoration and don't plan to cut with it or anything. Maybe I will unsheathe it once a month or so to show it to friends.

Clean off the packing grease with some alcohol and a rag, you should end up with a nice shiny blade, wipe over with some light machine/3-in-1 type oil, just a little on a cotton pad will do, if you (or others) handle the sword just give it another wipe down before you put it away.

Yep, the only purpose the grease serves is to keep it from corroding during transit or storage.
