From what I can gather, kanahada is forge scale. Not too sure on how different that is from plain Fe3O4... If I get pure Fe3O4, can I make kanahada out of it?

When I search kanahada, the stuff I pull up is black. It's described as burned iron oxide. You can buy it btw. My forge scale is gray. I think that they're taking rust and burning it. However, my book says that nugi is forge scale and choji oil. You can try it out. Let us know how it works. I don't think it works on modern steel blades though.

I'm trying a whole bunch of different stuff. As for it now working on modern steel, it does work on oroshigane/tamahagane, folded steels, and if my hypothesis is correct, even on monosteels (although I need to test to see if my trick works first).
Still, can I make kanahada by heating black Iron Oxide? How?

Well, if it's black already, you're there. I think they're taking red rust and burning it black. I think the nugi will work on a hand-polished blade. When you machine polish, it smears the pores in the metal shut. Then it won't take the nugi. That's my theory anyway.

fwiw, nobody is going to really say what's in their nugui. Generally kanahada is burnt forge scale. The degrees of burn can vary. Red iron oxide is also used as a base for other types of nugui. There really isn't a magic bullet for nugui. I make each batch individually for each sword.
As far as nugui on monosteel, it has to be super fine, and the surface of the steel has to be prepared right with polishing. Wrong techniques will close or "smear" the grain surface and you will do nothing but waste your time. Everything needs to be taken into consideration from materials to surface prep to the oil base that is used to mix the nugui.

Thanks Karl. I've been reading up and arrived at the same conclusions. Modern monosteel blades need a proper groundwork to even "accept" the nugui. I guess, I'll need to fully understand how it works so I can adjust the compositions to each blade.
I guess at this point its all about testing.
