Ok aside from my first post... I'd like to throw hy hat in the ring and ask if this concept design is possible for a Fully Functioning Working Blade...
What I have in mind is not really a change from your avarage Katana...
But more for a Modified Saya(Sheath) which itself is metal and sharpened to hold an Edge. But can house the Blade and inturn be used as its own weapon in a free hand or without ever drawing the acual sword.
Also based on double sword techniques and Agility and Balance Could a technically "Hollow" Sword even stand up to being used as Defense or as Offense. if it doesn't weigh the same as the blade used in the other hand.
just an Idea I had one day while Practicing Drawing Techniques.
Thanks again to anyone intrested in offering their Advise.

Well, i have seen katar that slide inside each other but they aren't swords. I'm not sure that such a thing would work. I would be very iffy about a hollow sword but i guess that could be just me.

I know that it's probably illegal as all-get-out, but does anyone know about the flintlock pistols that were mounted on pirate cutlasses? I'm thinking that that would be an awesome weapon.

As far as i know they are entirely a fantastical creation and their are no historical examples. Although i think there are a few french sabres with attached flintlocks.

Tim M: I wasn't talking about flintlocks on weapons, i was talking about the notion of flintlocks on pirate cutlasses. As far as i know there have been none recovered, not to say that there weren't any. To me i don't really see the point of a gun on a sword, better to have a sword in one hand and a gun in the other because then you have range of motion and it is not dependent in the direction the sword blade is pointing. Not to mention that having a gun on a sword would make it heavier and upset the balance. Then again, i may not know what i'm talking about and someone else might be able to suggest a way to make this possible.

Or maybe they're just awesome. After all, swords aren't the most practical implements of stabitty death in the day and age of firearms...so, really, we ARE dealing in anachronisms and throwbacks here. I just like the novelty.

A sword is better than a gun upclose and in my opinion a sword is better than a gun because guns are much easier to use than swords. Just my opinion though, i also prefer swords over guns because it is very hard to accidentally shoot yourself with a sword.

There have been quite a number of combination weapons made. Maces with flintlocks, swords, cutlasses, and the most famous is the Elgin Cutlass/Pistol or knife, since the blade is not as long as most cutlasses. The trouble with all ofthem is that they are not good firearms, nor are they good swords/maces, axes etc. The grips are not the same and the balance is thrown off.

Now, something even more outrageous: blade-chuks.
Nunchuks with blades on the ends.
