I am considering purchasing either a Condor K & T Lochnessmuk machete or Pack Golok. My question is has anyone owned either or both. I would be interested in knowing which design do you think would be the best for camping/survival craft. The way I see it thus far, is the utility to weight ratio supports the Lochnessmuk due to the slight point but it would be not as good of a chopper as the Pack Golok. Also the Golok would be more practical as the use for the point on such a large blade would be used very seldom. So I have talked my self into a circle. If anyone has any real experience owning them it would be better than conjecture. Currently leaning toward the Pack Golok to replace a camping hatchet. I prefer the blade geometry of the Lochnessmuk but think the Golok would be more useful...since combat is not my primary objective. Sorry, don't own either, but I'm going to go with your own thoughts here save one difference. I don't think the point on the Lochnessmuk (wait, what?) would detract from its chopping performance much at all, it's still got plenty of belly out there to do the job. That said...I have no idea why you'd need or want a point on a machete.
I'd personally go with the pack golok, it just looks more practical. Actually, looking at them both again, even the pack golok still has a pretty decent point. I like the steeper belly and am fond of the finish.
That said, I'm not aware of anybody who owns these, or for that matter uses them in any sort of actual field or camp type work, but surely somebody more experienced with machetes than myself will weigh in shortly.
I do like the pack golok, though...

I don't own one, but redwd707 has the Golok and let me use it. It's fantastic. It looks like it would be ungainly, but it is actually balanced pretty well. The blade looks like it wouldn't be a great cutter due its being so wide and the bevel looking kind of fat, but it was again just the opposite. Also, he said that he was pretty abusive with it, and it looked/cut just fine to me. It's one hell of a chopper/cutter.

My best advice for you Pat, would be to pop over to Bladeforums and post your question in General Discussion.
You could also PM a Member there who goes by 'WILLIAM.M'
Dr. Bill is good people, and I am fairly sure that he has posted up short in hand reviews on both of those Condor blades.
Bladeforums member 'FortyTwoBlades' is a Condor dealer who operates Baronyx Knife Co. I can virtually guarantee you that he has first hand experience with the entire Condor line. He also is good people, he personally inspects every Condor piece that he sells, and generally has his finger on what is hot and works the best in their line up.
You could PM him as well for insights, and possibly a good deal!!

Thanks Gentlemen.
Chuck... I have been to bladesforum...they are good people. I may still PM Dr. Bill.
Random....You said what I was thinking more clearly than I did. I was simply thinking a point of a chopper may give it more uses other than being a chopper. But it is not a very good point and the Golok just looks like a better chopper. I have an English Trade knife by Jeff White that makes good skinning/fillet knife.
Thanks Adrian...you put the icing on the cake. I want to camp-out and cut bottles...two of my truly enjoyable hobbies. Plus I just really like that finish. (And not that it matters but it more closely matches my trade knife. What can I say I like to accessorize.)
My hatchet weighs about 4.5 lbs and is a Gransfor Bruk carpenter's design. Very handy. But I could cut almost 3 lbs. That's clearly significant on a long trail. And let me be honest...I am just burning to try out a Condor machete.

It's funny you mention bottle cutting. John was actually getting silent cuts with his Golok. I couldn't believe it.

Thanks Adrian.A...Now I want one even more! Was it the Pack Golok or the 14" golok. I am after the shorter meatier Pack Golok. I am just having cash shortages and need to lighten my load of other projects.
