If you pass up a good sword due to the scabbard then you will pass up lots of great swords. Buy the sword and get a new scabbard made or something.

Larry has a Hanwei gladius. It's on my list.
My current favorite is Kris Cutlerys gladius.

aye aye.. I have the Hanwei early model Roman gladius (Mainz pattern). It's constructions are sturdy, surprising light & fast, but I never dare chop with it cos I saw the grip is sort of plastic; but hey, it's never meant to be used that way, ya? The gladius, esp. the Mainz pattern, is much a stabbing weapon, not a chopper, anyway

Overall, I very pleased with this sword - both aesthetic & handling. Here are some recent pix I took last Dec.:
