That's to European looking for my taste. Don't like the Cawood sword either. I like the pre and early Viking age swords. Wide blade wide fuller is my preference. I have read and watched videos that state that the Ulfberht was a couple cuts above the average typical Viking swords, and generally only owned by Viking royalty. PBS did an excellent video called The Secrets of The Viking Sword, and it was about recreating an Ulfberht. Unfortunately PBS has stopped streaming it. There may be other ways though, and I highly recommend watching it if you can find it. The Ulfberht was way ahead of it's time, and also one of the first Viking swords to employ carbon in the alloy. That meant it was stronger, more flexible, and held an edge better than other swords of the period.

Yep, I watched that video a couple times. Not saying it wasn't a good sword just that it's not to my liking. Besides if you buy a Ulfberht replica today you're not getting that superior material and workmanship your just getting a sword with the name etched on the blade. You think the Windlass Ulfberht is made any better than any other Windlass ? It's like with Motorcycle, a lot of people like these crotch rockets that look like something out of the movie Transformers I like the traditional cruiser, why I have a Harley Lowrider and Victory 8 Ball. All a matter of taste.

All a matter of taste. You are right, of course, but having an actual Ulfberht appeals to me. I have found one made from 1095 Damascus steel, but I'm not sure how that compares. Right now I'm looking at Crusader style swords.

Even if only a couple hundred apiece, you've got at least 5k in swords. I also note you have an Ulfberht reproduction, who made it, and how do you like it?

It’s not finished and it pre-dates the Viking age by around 50 years, but here is the blade for my Castle Keep Type A late migration period/early Viking age sword. It’s designed by me to be an accurate geibig type 1 blade but not a duplicate of any one original. Yes I already posted it in other threads but I felt like showing it again.

Thanks but not for sale, I got it at one of the scratch and dent sales that Windless has every spring. It probably was a one off that they tried a different grip on

But we're talking back then not now. Most Ulfberht swords made today are just another sword with the Ulfberht name etched on the blade. So unless you're will to spend a fortune to have a custom one made all you're paying for is the etching on the blade. And even if you do get one custom made do you really know for sure you're getting what you paid for ? Did the smith really put all that extra attention into the blade or did he short cut here and there ? Even back then there were fake Ulfberht swords being made. www.vikingrune.com/2009/01/viking-swords-ulfberht-fakes/
