Recently received my Felon from Zombie Tools. I ordered it because of its look, and the fact that I wanted a big knife that could stand up to the rigors of chopping and other tough tasks. I live in Montana and spend a lot of time camping and hiking in some pretty serious backcountry, so at times I could use a serious (big) knife. I was familiar with the durability of ZT knives and this looked like it would hold up just as well.
Full disclosure: I live a few miles from the Zombie Tools shop and like to support local businesses. That said, I do have blades of different kinds from different makers. I buy for quality and durability.zombietools.net/tools/
The Felon (not crazy about the name) is basically a giant bowie knife. It is ZT's homage to '"the badassery of Jim Bowie and the American knife making tradition." It is 19.5" overall with a blade 12.5" long and 1/4" thick. It's made of 5160 spring steel, full tang. It has a clip tip with a false edge and a hammer point on the spine for hammering, battening, etc. it weighs in at just over 2 lbs. Here it is alongside my 10.5" buck knife.
The Felon also has a nice choil so you can put your thumb and forefinger forward and get quite a bit of control for finer cutting tasks. The finish on the blade is a post-apocalyptic, distressed look. If you're into that, it's great. if you're into traditional, shiny blades you may not like it.
The knife comes with a black kydex sheath that holds the knife very securely. The sheath has a leg strap to keep it secure and tight on your leg.
When I got the knife it was paper cutting sharp. I wailed on a few branches about 1" thick and it chopped through them like butter. The weight is great for chopping and heavy cutting. (We just had a spring snowstorm, so a more comprehensive cutting test will have to wait). The leather wrapped grip felt good in my hands, no rough spots or edges. Overall, it's a great blade, though I realize it's not for everyone.
Pros:
Really High BA factor. Unique.
Big, tough full tang blade that will stand up to hard work.
Good cutting edge.
Hammer point on the spine for tough tasks.
As a combat knife, this blade's size should deter most attackers.
Long blade would be an advantage against most other knives, or wild animals.
Designed and produced to kill both zombies and unicorns.
Cons:
Post-apoc finish isn't for everyone
Too heavy/big for some people, though it feels good in the leg-strap sheath.
Big enough to be illegal in some places
Probably won't chop and cut quite like a machete or kukri, (but if it's comparable to other ZT blades, it will outlast cheaper blades of those styles).
If anyone's interested, 'll do a cutting test when the weather clears up here.
