Hey guys, my name is Rowan an I'm looking to make my first purchase of a sword. I've spent the last few days trolling through these forums and the rest of the internet looking at reviews on different models and have decided to get a medieval sword. But which one?
As with most people I am on a budget and was originally looking at under $200 but have revised up to $300.
One of my main problems is that I live in New Zealand and the sword selling market is rather small over here. Getting a single sword shipped from cult of athena is going to cost $80 US (or just under half what i wanted to spend total) so the sword I do get will most likely be the only one for a looong time.
I haven't owned a sword before (other than a wall hanger) and am unsure whether to get a practical sword (thicker blade rounded edges and no point) or a sharp weapon. I do want to do backyard cutting so a sharp blade would be nice but I also realize I am a novice with these weapons and how much damage you can do with them. I was wondering how much of a difference you guys find between cutting and in the case of practical weapons bludgeoning water bottles and the like. Which do you recommend as more fun?
The sword I'm currently looking at based on good reviews and general cost are:
Classic medieval sword (windlass)
www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... eval+Sword
At $224.95 US $273.22 NZD
Mercenary Sword (Hanwei)
www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... nary+Sword
At 274.95 US $333.95 NZD
Sharpened Single Hand (Tinker Pearce)
www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... Hand+Sword
At 299.95 US $364.32 NZD
Sharpened Bastard Sword with Fuller (Tinker Pearce)
www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... ith+Fuller
at $320.95 US $389.83 NZD
As you can see I've pretty much blown my original budget out of the water. And as those conversions are mid rate you can probably and another $20-$30 to each NZD price :?
Originally I was just going to get the Classic medieval but with shipping most of the cost of the sword it seems a waste.
At the moment I'm leaning towards the Tinker Pearce bastard sword. Though it's the most expensive on my list it seems to have the best reviews and everyone says its great fun to use. Most reviews say the edge isn't very sharp when it ships which suits me fine until i get used to it.
So three questions (plus the 4th from before):
Is a bastard sword a good choice since I can't seem to decide if I want a pure 1 handed weapon?
Is the Tinker Bastard Sword the best choice for a beginner with huge shipping costs, or is there a better sword you can think of for about the same cost?
Do you or anyone you know have experience with using one of those shipping forwarding places to reduce shipping costs to places like New Zealand and can recommend one?
Sorry for the novel and thanks for those who took the time to read it.
